Elysium: boring as ****. Just couldn't engage with it, M'eh. Sent from the public toilets outside the pub.
Tokyo Godfathers 8/10 Magnificent. Funny, charming, great characters. Facial animation doesn't get any better than this. Story ends a bit too happy though IMO, too many “lucky coincidences” in a row. It's a shame Satoshi Kon died so early, his work is consistently brilliant. I hope Dreaming Machine will get finished one day.
I read something around when he died about his life and work, and the last things he wrong. His parents came to his hospital and his mother cried saying "I'm sorry I didn't give you a stronger body". I admit I cried like a baby at that.
District 9 At the Cinema - 7/10 At home - meh/10 Just re-watched it, I remember liking it when I saw it in the cinema but watching it again just filled me with 'meh'. So much meh I gave up on it after an 40-ish minutes... Watchmen - *yawn*/10 Couldn't get into the graphic novel... Liked parts of the movie, but overall a completely forgettable experience... So forgettable I've forgotten most of it already...
You're Next - 7/10 It's not perfect but I really enjoyed it. Has a very strong start with some great kills, some laugh out loud moments, a good soundtrack and some interesting camera work. Well worth your viewing time if thriller and home invasion movies are your thing. Maniac - 8/10 Great movie. Loved the camera work and soundtrack. Elijah Wood plays a psycho really well. The story is pretty good too with minimal script. Another horror well worth your time. I would say the violence is quite strong but fitting for the film.
I only seen it about a year ago with my girlfriend, really enjoyed it, Robin Williams acting was great in it and it was refreshing to see a robot film without the stereotypical stuff as you mentioned
Agreed! One of my favourite films, much better than AI (imo). Worth picking up an Asimov compendium to read the original story too.
Oh god, yes. I love Bicentennial Man and I think Robin Williams does it justice. Little Miss would be proud.
Elysium - distinctly average as a film, visually spectactular - the shuttle crash was very impressive. I liked William Fitchner's personal shuttle having a Bugatti badge, I could almost believe that it was a real product and I thought the robotic police were very convincing. On the whole it was nice to look at but ultimately disappointing.
Oblivion Not really sure/10 It wasn't bad, but the pacing seemed strange to me. There were plotholes that could be elaborated on, but I accept that those come from this being a Graphic Novel conversion (a graphic novel, which, like most others, I know nothing about). That bubbleship ROCKS, though... I want one.
Star Trek: Into Darkness As a nuTrek film: 8/10 Compared to KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!! 5/10* *Personally I think ID is a better film than WoK... the the nuTrek films are lacking something...
After watching it again noticed a few similarities between the two films: In no particular order the following things happen in both films Spoiler Enterprise gets wrecked, by a stupidly powerful powerful, black ship. Cracks appear on the bridge [seemingly] all bar 2 of the non main cast enterprise crew die The Enterprise rises up through some clouds Spock loses his rag and tries to beat someone to a bloody mess Kirk's father [figure] dies Kirk is in bed with an alien female Kirk is in a bar [getting lectured by Pike] Kirk 'skydives' through space Not an exhaustive list... but there were a lot of 'this seems familiar...' moments
We're the Millers: 7/10 There's some seriously pant wettingly funny moments. Jennifer Aniston, dear science she still has it (whatever 'it' is..)!
Pain & Gain - 3/10 Excessive slow motion courteous of Michael Bay. The conclusion was poor to say the least and there was little to no moral to the story. I don't care that it is based on a true story, there should be a reason to tell that story, something to take away. Also pretty disgusted by the blatant glamorising of sex, violence and drugs that this film seems to paint, for a 15 rated film. (I'll probably start a separate rant thread about that!) To summarise, many a smirk, very few laughs and not hugely entertaining for a film that is supposed to be "tongue-in-cheek comedy".
Wreck it Ralph - a solid 8/10 I just remember chuckling and laughing almost all the way through - the whole family loved it.
Now You See Me - 4/10 Maybe you guys got my expectations low enough. There are certainly a lot of better heist films, but I guess I didn't expect anything more. It was horrible, but that's what I expected, so I was alright with it.
