@Xir I legitimately enjoy most blaxsploitation films, and I didn't like Black Dynamite.. It was just making fun of the genre, wasn't a true homage. If you want to see a good 'modern' film in that style, watch Jackie Brown.
The Expendables 5/10 A-Team 5/10 Exactly "MEH". Lotsa action, explosions, the stuff you'd expect, so actually they might just as well score 10/10, as it's what it promises on the tin. Absolutely brainless waste of time for me, but I can see the merit.... Or something.
During the last three nights I've seen those two and RED. I think I need to watch a couple of slow-paced dramas to even things out a bit.
I really liked the A-team, lots of action some comedy and overall a fun experience. 8/10 from me (as long as you know what you're going in for!).
Knowing 2009 Even though I like Nicolas Cage (as an actor ) I didn't expect too much from this movie when I first read the summary. It is pretty predictable (it's partly about predictions afterall...) but still managed to keep me in suspsense. In the beginning of the movie they succeed in creating a bit of mystery, just enough to keep it believable and have you guessing. The plot didn't have much surprises and I'm glad they didn't drag it out too long, as they would have lost the suspense if they did, but while it wasn't surprising, it wasn't dissapointing either. Overall I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. It's not a must-see movie if you ask me, but better then most of the crap they dare to play on tv these days. IMDB rates it a 6.4/10 and I agree with this rating and will grant it a nice round 7/10.
sorry for the lack of clarity, plus i'm overly formal when i've just joined a community. for vintage cinema buffs, i was referring to the red shoes, not aronofsky's previous films. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Red_Shoes_(1948_film)
RE: Knowing. If you have a friend who is both, impressionable and a massive Sci-Fi fan you can have great fun with a little practical joke. I varnished up 3 or 4 nice smooth black pebbles and left them secreted under the tea-towel in the kitchen of my next door neighbour whilst being there just to chat and have a cuppa etc. The freaked out phone call about an hour later was priceless Just watched Machete for the first time this evening. Ridiculously over the top and mindless violence. Did nicely for a night in drinking with buds.
Throbbi, I'm desperatly in need of some impressionable friends! That pebble joke is a good one. When I was at uni I had a dorm-mate that always came by for the latest Prison Break/Lost/.. episode and he was always so tense when watching them and was easy to scare. So one time we played a good prank on him. Another dorm-mate edited an very suspension-filled prison-break episode and put in that scary face & scream from that fake puzzle-thingy (you know the one). When he came around my dorm to get that episode, the editing friend wend in his dorm and hid in his bathroom (3 feet behind his desk/chair)(with mask and machete-like knife). You can guess the rest of the story.. he was so scared and ran out of his dorm screaming like a little girl. He never really forgive us for that one, he never asked for another episode of anything after that.. haha. I liked Machete a lot, seriously one of my favorite movies from last year. Offcours it's completely over the top, but unlike Steven Segal his own movies, the violence isn't meant to be taken seriously so I found it hilarious. But I did have a very political backgrond story and was put toghether very well.
Alpha Dog 7.5/10 Quite good. It's quite obvious that the good parts were exaggerated but I still enjoyed the story. I never thought I'd say this but Timberlake was actually good in this movie. Early in the film I wanted to punch him but his last few scenes were great. Emile Hirsch was totally out of place, which is sad because he's easily the most talented actor in the movie. I thought Anton Yelchin was perfectly casted and he made me care about his character. The pool scene was awesome... Amanda Seyfried and Amber Heard ?! LUCKY *******!
RED 7/10 Not usually my cup of tea... but an excellent piece of Friday night entertainment. Saw it here: http://www.therexberkhamsted.com/ which is great cinema experience.
Jesus Christ Superstar (2000) 8/10 I am not big on musicals, unless it's some of Andrew Lloyd Webber's work. JCS is definately one of the onoes I'd still love to see live (Having seen Cats Live). Not much to tell about the film. It's more like the stage version than the 1973 film, which makes for little cinematography. Starring Glenn Carter as Jesus, Jérôme Pradon as Judas, Renee Castle as Mary Magdalene, Rik Mayall as Herod, the cast is pretty solid. I preferred (having heard recordings of this edition) Sebastian Bach as Jesus, but Herod and Judas are almost perfect. It never ceases to amaze me how some of those stage actors can sing and act simultaneously....
In Bruges 9/10 "There's gonna be a war between the blacks and the whites..." Green Hornet 8/10 Didn't think it was going to be good from the commercials, went to see it with the girlfriend's family and was very pleasantly surprised. It's ridiculous at times, but still safely the funniest movie I've seen so far in 2011. Fight scenes were well executed, only major negative was an excess of Seth Rogen's weird yelling-but-not-yelling.
From Paris with Love - 7/10 John Travolta, some other guy and a vase full of coke go on a rampage around Paris killing terrorists. Its entertaining and is exactly what you would expect based on my brief synopsis.
I was personally very underwhelmed by "In Bruges". It did however make me visit Bruges on my last holiday Probably saw it with the wrong expectations, I expected something more like "Lock, Stock and two smoking Barrels".
Snatch 8/10. Quite surprisingly I hadn't seen this one before. It's a Richie film, both in good and the bad. I like the style, but I watched the Lock Stock and two smoking barrels not too long ago, so this just felt like a sequel.. Better keep a good gap between seeing these two.
