Avengers: Age of Ultron Spoiler ( low-res poor audio edition ) 8/10 I enjoyed it a lot, some good one liners and chemistry between characters, though the editing/pace is so damn fast in places you'd definitely need to watch it again at 1/2 speed to catch exactly what happens. Agree about it setting up later films in the franchise, though it stands alone just as well, as did the first Avengers. Hulk-buster fight was epic, though Spoiler the imagery of the building collapsing was a little jarring and maybe too reminiscent of the WTC . Can't wait for whatever comes next...
A Good Day to Die Hard - 1/10 - and thats being generous! What a waste of time this was, easily the worst of the series and probably the worst of any film series. I wanted to like it as I have a soft spot for the John MacLane character but really, FFS!! Sh**e, sh**e, sh**e!!!!!!! I should have listened to the folks that said don't bother but I didn't, please don't repeat my mistake. I really felt like ejecting the disc at the "we've neutralised the radiation" line but it was only pigheaded stubborness on my part that stopped me. I'd paid my money and I was gonna see it through - admittedly it was only £3 and even that was too much. I was really tempted to deposit something soft and steaming on the disc and mail it to Bruce Willis as a token of my esteem. I think I now realise why some folks shoot their TV's.
John Wick 8/10 At first I thought "what the hell is this..." but as the movie got going I started to really enjoy it. Well worth watching.
Divergent 6/10 It isn't bad or good. It isn't great, but it isn't utter crap. All I can see from this film is a cash in to films like the hunger games. I've never read the book, so basing completely on film. The acting, geez is it wooden. It's like the actors only saw the script for the first time an hour before shooting it. There are some good moments that you can actually believe there is some emotion in their acting, but it still isn't amazing. I'm disappointed because I see some good actors from Television series I currently watch like Tony Goldwyn from Scandal and Maggie Q from Stalker and they gave terrible performances in this particular film when I've seen great ones on Television. The action isn't completely horrible, but isn't that entertaining either. I'm not quite sure what's going on with all of this dart gun nonsense, like they used all of their budget on the giant zip line scene and couldn't afford futuristic guns. I love the premise - which is why the execution annoys me. In this distopian dociety, people are pigeon holded into particular factions; Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave), and Erudite (the intelligent) and that's that. PEople of one faction don't really socialise or see other factions. You live and work with people of your faction - even if your family is of a different faction. It's interesting because the government controls the factions, and the homeless are factionless, people that don't fit in because they are no good in any faction and cannot make a real contribution. The divergent thing is mentioned only a couple of times in this film and is a minor side plot. It's the damn title of the film!! The battle between two particular factions is the main plot of the film. The main character has to deal with that she is Divergent, meaning she's great at bloody everything - poor her for being so talented. There's no real struggle - there's some minor peril but you never feel like the characters are in real danger. A lot of people loved this film but I just couldn't see the fuss. The premise shows real promise, but this film was so poorly executed. I'll wait and see what 'Insurgent' is like. Loved the Blind Side - saw it in the cinema when it first came out with the missus. Bought it as soon as it came out on DVD. I'm not normally one for these kinds of films but it was just a great film - almost perfect in fact. The character development is not just great but it's both believable and emotional. The emotions run high and you feel that emotion. One of my favourite modern films. I give it a good 9.5/10 as well.
Missed at the cinemas... Got a five quid credit at Amazon prime so will be watching this during the week... Ian
Avengers - Age of Ultron 7.5/10 Good fun, all in all. Some minor things caused me to not score higher. Also, for those that haven't seen this, I'd say Imax > 3D any day of the week
Guardians of the Galaxy: 06/10 GotG is a lot like Avengers which I hate with a passion and yet I liked it. The movie is a space opera road movie that doesn't take itself serious. The soundtrack is brilliant. All in all it's very enjoyable.
I really didn't like divergent, like you said it reminded me TOO much of hunger games and I also thought the ending was terrible.
See - paying a premuim for IMAX AND 3D, I wouldn't do. I just don't think 3D adds much to films. IMAX does, but 3D would make for hard viewing there, methinks.
Locke - 3/10 I'm a big Tom Hardy fan, but this was one of the dullest films I've ever watched. The story was crap (Unless maybe you got off on Concrete?) and too cliché with the morals and all that stuff. Literally sitting in a car on a motorway for an hour and a half nothing else.
The Sweeny 2012 -10/10 Dear God why did I watch this sh**e?!!!!!!! Only redeeming moment in this whole film was a flash of Agent Carter's cleavage - its that bad (the film, not the cleavage). Don't waste your time, seriously, not even for a "how bad can it be" moment, thats how I ended up watching this drivel. PS I put -10 for the score because I couldn't do an infinity symbol.
Guardians of the Galaxy 8.5/10, funny movie with a brilliant soundtrack......my Spotify is full of GOTG now lol. Avengers : Age of Ultron 8/10, loved the movie and the FX are brilliant, I felt the "banter" felt a bit forced and without spoiling it one joke goes on 10 times too many for me.
Any one see Dredd they other night, Saturday I think? I did not think it was possible to remake a picture that was worse than the original which was really bad.
hobbit desolation of smaug 4/10 The Hobbit films have really disappointed me. Maybe its just me getting old but I compare modern films to ones 10 years ago and there just not as good and I blame it on CGI. It is all epitomized in one shot for me and that's this one where Legolas rides a CG horse. This could have easily been filmed, would have looked ten times better instead it just looks terrible. Especially when you compare it to scenes like this one which have a sense realism about them.
Not sure what film you were watching, but no way could you say the new Dredd was worse than the 1995 Stallone thing. Personally I really enjoyed it. It was a gloriously gritty and violent (if not simple) film, worked for me at least given what I sat down to watch. I can see how some might find it boring though, it's not exactly a mind bender or full of character development either. I wouldn't blame CGI, blame instead the choice to use it. It's the same deal with 3D IMO. A good director sees the importance of 3D and uses it appropriately (such as in Avatar or Gravity), bad 3D just gets in the way and give people headaches. CGI can and is very important, the shot you liked was also mostly CGI, but it's all about the way it's used. I don't know what Peter Jackson was smoking with the Hobbit, but it simply wasn't even close in terms of direction to the LotR films. It just reeked of "Georgge Lucasification", lots of silly gags, making everything as absurd as possible and overuse of CG elements. The original films managed to tread the boundaries perfectly. I'm always amazed when a director somehow fails to grasp why his own works were popular.
Poor acting. Cartoon violence. Rubbish CGI. Riddled with errors of every sort. I find it odd but mistakes being continuity or whatever just jump out at me these days. Must be an age thing. And yes I do consider it as bad if not worse than the Stallone film. I was hoping to be entertained but I was not. But each to his own.
The only saving grace for the original Dredd was Stallone (now that's saying something), the new one was just plain awful.
I actually like both Dredd's, each in it's own way Dredd is a comic, I expect, nay demand cartoon violence
