The Jungle Book 2016 8/10 New version of jungle book in live action. It's better than I expected it to be. The kid playing Mowgli is actually a pretty good little actor, I'm sure he's going to get more work in the future. All of the main, classic cast of characters are played by some top-notch actors. Bagheera is played By Ben Kingsley, Shere Khan is Idris Elba, Kaa is Scarlet Johansson, Bill Murray is Baloo and Christopher Walken is King Louie. The Visuals are simply stunning. Absolutely the finest and most convincing CGI i've ever seen in a movie, ever. The story moves along nicely and it's never boring really. I wouldn't call it a film for younger children though, as it can be scary in places when animals are scrapping and such. The songs strangely are there too. I wanna be like you is actually sung by Christopher Walken and actually sounds pretty good. A negative is that the songs don't really fit into the film very well. They're pretty well performed, but it seems pretty strange in such a serious, live action film. A visually stunning and entertaining film only slightly marred by some strange choices. I feel as though I'm biased because I loved the original very much when I was a child, and still do now. But even for someone who's never seen the original like my mrs. it's a pretty entertaining film.
Ted 5/10 Some movies just overdo it, especially on the fart/piss/feces joke front. It would have been better with less of this, the concept is great. Some scenes are hilarious. A Million Ways to Die in the West was better for it, still in MacFarlane style. The German word of the day for this movie is "Fremdschämen"
The secret life of pets 4/10 an interesting and unique premise that somehow manages to end up throwing away the premises of which it's ads have been touting since it was first announced. a few laughs but for the most part its forgettable, i found myself struggling to keep watching midpoint through.
Watched this last night and I'd peg it at around that as a movie. I nearly gave it a miss on account of the Michael Bay element, but pleased I didn't as it was actually quite grown up. Could have done with a bit more character development in a few areas, but still around 2000% more than I would have expected from one of his movies. Also pleased it entirely omitted any political commentary. IMO this film didn't get anywhere near the attention it deserved on release. The BD sound/picture quality is utterly phenomenal - If anyone is considering making the move to 4K just for the increased resolution then check it out if you want a reason to save your money - it's certainly making me question whether it's worth bothering. Bumps it up an extra point for me: 8/10
^Now I want to see it! Since we made the upgrade to a 50" TV we've never found good quality 1080p to be lacking in definition, and I know that's an argument that most pro-4K people use where larger screens are concerned. Horses for courses I guess.
John Carter - ...OF MARS!/10 There was a decent film in there somewhere, i'm sure of it... somewhere, deep down there were some good ideas....
Stitches 7/10 As a big Horror fan, I caught this by accident and it ended up being more enjoyable that I thought. It stars Comedian Ross Noble as a crap clown who dies during a party after the bratty children sabotage him. Many years later, the children are teens and the Clown comes back to life on the anniversary of that birthday party to exact his revenge. It's a B movie quality slasher. It uses cheap but over the top gory effects but it's actually extremely entertaining. Ross Noble absolutely kills it (get it?) as Stitches the clown. It's a comedy horror, so it's not supposed to be very serious and I was laughing quite a bit. For example, pulling out intestines and proceeds to make a balloon animal out of it. Whilst not amazingly funny on it's own, Noble really pulls it off with his presence. He's quite the animated, physical comedian anyway so he puts it to use nicely here. I give props to the use of the effects on an obviously small budget in such creative ways. It's not very well scripted, and if I didn't know better I'd say some of it was improvised as Noble does best. It was a bit all over the place as the story went. It also spent a bit too much time on exposition at the beginning with the teenagers - you don't end up caring about them anyway. It's worth a watch if you're a horror fan or a fan of the Comedian. It's decent and quite a laugh despite being a low budget film.
The Conjuring 2 not sure/10 This was a bit hit and miss. To some extent, the blatant attempt to mix The Exorcist with Amityville Horror worked. There were good frights there. On the other hand, it wasn't particularly inspired, and UTTERLY predictable. Doesn't help that I would have preferred a different ending. Captain America Civil War 6/10 So...erm... It does ultimately feel like a Captain America (and his perfect teeth) movie. That's not a great thing in my books (since I actually FORGOT that I had seen Winter Soldier, as well as most of the plot of the origin-movie). That said, it's also good fun, loads of action, and the fight scenes especially are fun to watch. I find myself liking Ant Man and Falcon more than any of the others, though.
To be honest, I never heard people saying "there should be a Captain America movie" before they made one. They made one just to give some exposition to the Avengers, then made more because they wanted to tie it into the MCU. I've not seen this one yet, people seem to prefer the other superheroes than the main title character himself. Chris Evans isn't the best actor either. He was alright in Snowpiercer, but he's normally pretty naff.
Took the kids to see... Angry Birds - the movie - 7/10 (for what it is) I was prepared to being disappointed, but I actually found it highly enjoyable. The characters are well realised, the dialogue is suitably cheesy and the animation is top-notch. The little bird-chicks are cute to the point of being nauseating, and the pigs are just the right combination of contemptible and stupidity bordering on brilliance . The jokes however, did seem tailored to a more mature audience, but even so: the kids loved it. Then I saw this one with the wife... Independence day - resurgence - 7/10 We both liked it a lot, and were happy to see the aliens getting a bit more screentime. The aliens are as nasty and unlikeable as ever, and mankind is still as "BOO-YAA we'll F-up your sh**" as they need to be. All in all; a very enjoyable sci-fi popcorn flick to round off summer with. Looking forward to the next, and final, installment.
A Matter of Life and Death - This is the universe... Big, isn't it?/10 One of my all-time favourites and whilst the quality isn't great, it's freely available to watch on archive.org - here.
Warcraft 6/10 It wasn't bad... but CGI is not quite "there" for me... the plot was a bit "meh" as well.. but then, Not being much into the warcraft franchise, I suppose I am not the target audience. X-Men Apocalypse 6/10 Again, not bad... not as good as DOFP...
Clear the backlog: Finding Dory - 9/10 Both my 3 y/o and I enjoyed it a lot. Wonderful Octopus Angry Birds - 3/10 The boy enjoyed it and it will never be watched again. Blazing Saddles - 6/10 Some real lol moments thanks to Gene Wilder, but not my kind of humor really. Cpt America Civil War (2nd watch) - bored shitless on a second watch/10. Started to skip through it then just turned it off. Midnight Special - First hour 9/10 Hooked me good. Second hour 6.5/10 runs out of steam once the curiosity gap is filled. Can't understand the 6/10 on IMDB, kinda harsh
Captain America: Civil War - I Don't Care/10 I'll be honest, I had the same problem with this that I did with Minions in that it felt like a series of shorts that didn't quite tie together as a full film. Also 'I don't care' [or variants thereof] seems to be said a lot, and when the characters don't really care about what's going on, the audience [the audience being me] stops caring. Plot Summary: Starts off trying to deal with the Avengers ****ing **** up without caring about the consequences, most of rest of the film is people ****ing **** up without caring about the consequences and it ends with **** being ****ed up and you not really caring about the consequences.
