I thought, just after finishing it, it would have probably been better to watch with frame interpolation (i.e. 'soap-opera mode') enabled.
T2 Trainspotting - 8/10 Totally wasn't what I was expecting. It didn't have the impact of the first one, but was funny and sad at times. The whole theme of the movie was reminiscing/nostalgia so the flashbacks added to the feeling of looking back on days gone by. I think I'd like to see it again as there's probably bits I missed.
Anyone else fed up of characters about to blow something up in an action film saying a line similar to "Light it up!"? I noticed it getting used too much last year I think, and then was utterly gutted to hear it being used in both The Force Awakens and Rogue One. If it appears in The Last Jedi I may have to scream.
A lot to catch up on over the past 6 months? My neighbour Totoro - 8/10 - Slow but beautiful and heartwarming Spirited Away - 9/10 - Stunning and gripping story Princess Mononoke - 9/10 - Darker than the two above but great story, stunning animation and incredibly surreal LaLa Land - 6/10 - It's visually stunning but you could write that plot on a postage stamp. The Lego Movie - 8.5/10 - Better on a second viewing Versus - 8/10 - Japanese ninja zombie in some crazy homage to Tarantino - watch this! Escape from NY - 8/10 - Does what it says on the tin Escape from LA - 2/10 - Complete sell out Big Trouble in Little China - 8.5/10 - Fantastic Executive Decision - 5/10 - Sadly this was pretty boring and I remembered it pretty fondly Soldier - 5/10 - Not Kurts finest work but entertaining enough New Jack City - 8.5/10 - Snipes at his best. Standard street criminal to big boss story but its brilliant all the same! White Men Cant Jump - 8.5/10 - Brilliant stuff
Arrival - 9/10 It's a great movie with a great message. My wife didn't didn't know how she felt about it but the next morning after she had slept she said she really loved it and couldn't stop thinking about it. It's definitely worth watching. Tickled - 7/10 A very strange documentary about competitive tickling. It's hard to say it's good . . . but it's interesting. I watched out of curiosity and couldn't stop watching because that curiosity stays through the whole film. Very weird indeed. Little Men - 7/10 This is one that I didn't really like at first. It's a good 10 minutes shy of being a full 90 minutes and it leaves you wanting a little more. Some things feel unresolved and perhaps that's the point. Overall it's a nice coming of age story but I don't think it deserves the critical acclaim it received. Florence Foster Jenkins - 7/10 It gets an extra point for teaching me about a historical figure I had never heard of before. Other than that it's pretty formulaic. It looks nice and Meryl Streep gives a wonderful performance, but if it weren't based on a real person this movie would be crap.
underworld blood wars urgh/10 whilst not the most brilliant of series its always nice watching Kate Beckinsale run around in pvc, however the editing in this one is absolutely dire, the director has no sense of either pace or cut timings, ended up binning it before i finished the film. shame really
Passengers 7/10 Mostly solid movie with a few niggling plot holes. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence make a good acting duo, just some of the events are a little dumbed down and unbelievable. Worth one watch at least, just maybe not a rewatch.
Moana - 8/10 Overall very enjoyable but OMFGTHEPACEISSOFASTINTHEFIRST20MINUTES. Until she actually leaves it's dry and forced, but after that very fun. Too many 4th wall breaks, and I find it hard to stomach the use of American voice actors for ethnic South Pacific when it's trying reeeeallly hard to be culturally attuned elsewhere, but then again so has every Disney movie ever.. Would NOT have guessed it was Dwayne Johnson for Muai and there's no IMDB credit for the giant crab, but his voice has me itching wondering who he is. EDIT: OMG
agreed. I was looking forward to watching this but it was all over the shop! Arrival 6/10 not as good as I was hoping for. Was a bit slow in places but watchable.
Hush - 7.5/10 What seems like a very conventional home invasion thriller is actually much more interesting and ingenious than first anticipated. A deaf-mute girl is preyed upon and must rely on her particular skills to survive. It's quite realistic. The Psycho isn't kind of superhuman who never makes mistakes. He's human, and the film reminds you of that. He is clumsy sometimes, but a downside is not really knowing his motivation. There's a slight emphasis on the fact he knows the victim, but it isn't explained well. The suspense is different from other films. She can't rely on her hearing the antagonist, nor can she really call for help. She uses her focused feelings and sight to attempt to get the upper hand and it really keeps you on the edge of your seat. I recommend it to those who like Home-invasion thrillers or any thrillers at all. It's not really a 'horror' film, but it can be pretty scary I would imagine. There's some blood here and there, but it's no gorefest.
Split 9/10 For me best McCavoy film todate, loved the story and idea it portrays. So the film was the cake and than the very last scene was the sweet icing!!
Underworld - Blood Wars 2/10 WOW this was bad. The whole film felt like it was building up... to the credits (really - that's what it felt like). Dodgy CGI in quite a few places, a random storyline of betrayal and convolusion means that not even Queen Kate in Spandex could make this film enjoyable.
Hacksaw Ridge - 7/10 Mel Gibson war flick. Based on a medal of honor (sic) recipients real-life story of events on Okinawa. The twist being he's a conscientious objector and doesn't carry a gun for religious and family history reasons. I liked it, brutal and gritty and touching at points but the religious claptrap did wind me up a bit, you might not have this same reservation though.
Lego Batman 6/10 Bit disappointed but I may have gone in with my hopes to high, whole thing felt a little underwhelming some funny jokes trailers did seems to use most of them though. Kids will likely love it.
Not a movie but wacthed some eps of guilerme del toros Trollhunters on netflix last night, pretty good if familar take on the genre. My kids loved it. Charector design kinda reminds me of big hero 6.
Alice Through the Looking Glass - 6.5/10 A bit disappointing, nice to see Sacha Baron Cohen not make his usual "please-shut-up-youre-embarrasing-to-look-at" jokes. Visually it's oppulent, but the story just didn't do it for me. Something's wrong with the bluray....or more likely, my setup does not cope with DTS HD and it does not grade down well.
Good news! It's been renewed for another 13 episodes. Bad news! The lead actor will have to be recast, as he was voiced by the late Anton Yelchin.
