both my local cinemas are fully booked for last jedi this weekend:/ looks like it may be next week when i get time now
Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Oh My/10 Managed to shelter myself away from spoilers and reviews yesterday and this morning before my cinema showing at 10:30, It's easily the best film of 2017. Sam
My name is Lenny Watched this last night after stumbling upon it at about 1am. Ended up having a late night as it was that good. It's basically Lenny Mclean's early life story. Funny at times, very sad at others and lots of lavverly violence, if that sort of thing floats your boat. Main character did very well IMO and it was a good watch. 8/10. I'm also glad that at least some people like the latest Star Wars. All I am getting on FB is numpties who could do better /eyes officially rolling.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi Saw it yesterday, really enjoyed it, and I think you don't need to be a Star Wars fan to enjoy it at all. Also had some great music and was visually stunning which is always nice
Star Wars: The Last Jedi - I think I saw a different film to you lot 7/10 I enjoyed it, without doubt - The musical score was excellent, as you would expect, and some of the visuals... wow. As a whole, it was good - well worth seeing but not the mind blowing epic people have claimed (including a couple of mates). It was stretched out too thin in places and very predictable: Spoiler Rebellion in dire peril - check Luke is the reluctant mentor - check Rey faces off with Kylo/Snoke - check Kylo is conflicted and flip-flops before eventually taking command - check Inevitable cute creature cameo - check Luke redeems himself and dies - check All these things I was pretty much expecting walking in, and this was despite keeping myself away from any and all spoilers Other bits were a tad disjointed: Spoiler Flying Leia - yeah, I can suppose all kinds of crap to try and justify it, but there wasn't enough evidence in the films to support that kind of power. Also, why did military legend, vice admiral hoodafuqisshe wait until three quarters of the fleeing rebels were obliterated before martyring herself? Rey's escape from Snoke's command ship? Benicio Del Toro's character was there as little more than a plot device to capture Finn and Rose - really frikkin thin
Star Wars: The Last Jedi 8/10 I enjoyed it, visual and audio-wise it was great (well worth seeing in a cinema), but I thought Force Awakens and Rogue One had me hooked better out of the three recent ones. My real complaint was the length of the film, or the fact that the length was noticeable - a good half an hour could've been saved throughout I think. The Mrs fell asleep, but it was quite warm in the screening we were in, and she's not the biggest Star Wars fan - Rogue One had her paying attention though.
Star Wars The Last Jedi What a mixed bag. A good mixed bag though. There was some really dumb stuff sprinkled throughout the movie, but overall I very much enjoyed it, a lot more than TFA and R1 in fact. It took some surprising risks (considering it's Disney-Star Wars) and subverted a lot of tropes and expectations. Lots of aesthetically pleasing shots (and some fun cuts), a fine soundtrack and remarkably good sound design. Liked the characters, Kylo Ren in particular was about 99% less angsty and irritating than in TFA. Great! Spoiler And I thought it was amazing they used an actual puppet for Yoda. The jokes were ehh, sometimes a bit too tonally dissonant. Spoiler Also I loved some of the out-of-universe messages put into the movie; criticisms of diehard SW fandom, SW clichés, etc. I'd have to rewatch and pay more attention to catch more of those. It's, again, so surprising to find this in a modern Disney-controlled mega franchise. It's like the Disney commity just let the director do his thing as long as he put in the stupid toy-selling animals and Marvel-like oneliners. I think Rian Johnson did intend to kill Finn though, in his heroic attempt to stop the lazer drill thing, and the commity stopped him from doing that. Hence the dumbest part of the whole film: Rose's "love will save us in the end" bit and the sudden non-sequitur romance that wasn't developed at all. It won't blow your mind and it's a bit of a mess overall, but it's definitely enjoyable. Recommended. Also porgs are terrible.
so watched last jedi last night 7/10. could only get spaces for the 3d screening aside from the opening scene very little 3D effects. the black panther trailer had tons of it. over all enjoyed it. but... Spoiler luke in the film was not somat that sat well with me. hee seemed almost child like headless chicken when yoda turned up. leias jedis powers......what? kylo ren for someone who wants to be a bad ass is just someone who resembles a spoilt brat. and a not so good sith needing help from a someone who is a noob during a fight. the bad guy should be scary cold blooded like vader was. final duel, if that was gona be lukes final fight it should have showed him flex some jaw dropping power before vanishing. theres been a ton of decent material from 80s/90s books graphic novels that disney lumped in the legends universe that they could have drawn from specially the awesome thrawn series but who knows why they are discarding it.
The Greatest Showman: I have a new crush and her name is Martha Nichols/10 Fabulous woman in a gold leotard aside, pretty standard Christmas musical. The singing and sets are fabulous, Hugh Jackman is fabulous, Zac Effron is fabulous, Zendaya is fabulous, Keala Settle is so fabulous she sprouted a beard, a fabulous beard. Some of the CG animals are rubbish, but no less fabulous.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle 6/10 The first one was decidely silly and enjoyable. This one just went too far over the top and it felt like a Police Acadamy 6, amusing in places but it ran out of steam too early.
If you know WHY they put the porgs into the movie, they become a bit more endearing. Skellig Michael, the real island off the coast of Southern Island is an amazing place. Went there with the gf a dozen or so years ago. You take a fairly long boat ride in a fairly small boat over fairly choppy seas to get there, When there you get to head up to the monastic structures. The whole place looks exactly like it does in TFA & TLJ. The only difference is that the real island is covered in puffins. Puffins here, there and everywhere. For Star Wars, rather than erase them from every shot (especially the long shots) they fattened them up and made them porgs. The flying, walking and even sounds are an embellishment layer on top of real puffins in some shots. Pretty clever really. Skellig Michae without the puffins would be wrong, so I'm glad they managed to keep them in... kind of. As to what they did with them? Well that's a different thing all together. But I don't feel they distracted from the movie at all.
Bright - 8/10 It's kind of hard to miss the internet buzz about this film. I managed to go in spoilerless. From what had been said I'd expected something funnier. I agree that it would have been better as a serial, like The Punisher, because there was an awful lot I was scratching my head over and having to infer from alternate universe knowledge. Still. It felt like a very well put together film that I genuinely wanted to know what happened next. I feel invested in the universe. It felt like the writer got drunk, made certain things more badass, and mashed a shadow run rulebook into the LAPD beating black people, historically. Im looking forward to the next one.
Bright - 8/10 Well I certainly wasn't expecting training day crossed with LOTR, pleasantly impressed actually. I'm pleased there is a sequel on the way, this is a world I'd be very interested in diving into more.
Star Wars TLJ. Only spoiled by a numbnut eating an endless supply of popcorn one at a time very slowly/10 Enjoyed it. Nice surprise in the change from "oh there's a big ball of death that we have to blow up". But yeah, why do people need to stuff their faces for most of films?
Spiderman: Homecoming - Some little ******* in red tights/10 Features one of the MCU's better villains. Though given how naff most of the MCU's villains have been, not the highest of bars.
Saw star wars the other day: Prequels/10 Actually this was not a result I was expecting, but myself and everybody I went with, plus other friends and family etc. all arrived that this was one of the worst films. In fact I would say it was so bad that it was easily down there with the Phantom Menace, yup I went there. I'll happily fight my corner on this one as I can't fathom how somebody even could enjoy it, like there were basically no redeeming features to the film.
