I really enjoyed the ceremony, didn't think I would.

The German dignitary waving to his country's team was funny as hell and I hadn't even noticed Boris and Camilla's reaction at the time.

IDD - Quit moaning people :)

I enjoyed the opening of the games. Some dodgy cuts but moaning pretty good, and Danny Boyle did a great job :) Great music, comedy, story, and excellent getting so many people so involved with it all.

    That was a fantastic ceremony.

The transition from agricultural to industrial settings was incredible, albeit not everyone might understand it. Brunel was a nice touch, and the children singing was beautiful. The five rings idea was excellent.

Fair play to the Queen for being part of the Bond scene, and Churchill waving was incredibly British. The entire NHS scene was very well put on. Let the Yanks see our dirty socialism! Ahem. And seeing Voldemort defeated by Mary Poppins was incredible.

Now, the music. Rowan Atkinson should be commended for being able to keep playing that note. The great big celebration of the Digital Age was fitting, and Tim Berners-Lee turning up provided Nerdgasm. And the use of those seat-side "pixels" was beautiful. I felt that Emile Sande's rendition of Abide With Me was good, but the dance was incredible. Apparently the US cut of the show cut out the memorial to the Victims of 7/7 for adverts. Lovely.

Kudos to the volunteers. The march was your standard fare, but the torch was incredible, as was that little butterfly sequence. The fact that young athletes lit that incredible flame really showed that this Olympic is designed to inspire the next generation.

Fireworks = awesome. Finally, I wasn't too sure about old Macca's performance. His voice seems to be dwindling.

Anyway, Danny Boyle put on a fnatastic show.

TL;DR: Capitalism, Socialism, Cheesecake, Nerdgasm, F**k Mitt Romney.

The NHS celebration I thought was way too political. Imagine a homage to the National Insurance Act or the Job Centre lol!

Missed the whole thing, was working all night, completely forgot about it :sigh:

Thankfully, I remembered to Sky+ it days ago, so I can sit down and watch it tomorrow after the Grand Prix :D From what I've seen on the news, it looks to have been an awesome show! Let the games begin! I'm genuinely excited that it has finally started! It seems like only yesterday that Boris Johnson was announcing the bid win and that ping-pong was coming home :D That's an unbelievable 7 years ago - the same day as the 7-7 attacks in London. Where did those seven years go?! :jawdrop:

It was only political because of the current politics that surround the NHS.

The NHS is something to be celebrated. Universal free (let's not have that debate, you know what I mean) health care is one of humanities greatest achievements and was rightly celebrated last night.

Thought the opening ceremony was great, but the commentary during the performances was ruining it for me. Couldn't they have shut up and only do commentary on the part where the countries were entering the stadium instead?

I've just watched it again. It's on iplayer without commentary (The none commentary version is actually most watched, what does that tell you!).

It's a very powerful thing without commentary, superb.

They had a moment of silence and a dance for the people who lost their lives that day, I thought it was quite powerful.

Pity about Cavendish not getting a medal. Went to see the race around Leatherhead, but the British team was always a significant distance behind the breakaway pack.

The reason for that was that the press was full of "Cavendish gold" everywhere, even outside UK. Response to that was simple - no one helped the UK team up until last 30-40km, and at that point it was lost, because 4 of your 5 guys already had no power to push more to get back that minute.

At least you had a chance with 5 bikers, poor Sagan from Slovakia was all alone.

yeah I was quite glad that one of the options on the red button was without commentary, made it much more watch-able.

Do you have a link to it? I searched at http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/search?q=ceremonies but the third result gives a 404

Didn't see the cycling today but given how much Cavendish was targeting the gold it surprises me that the GB team hadn't realised that they would need to close down any breakaways immediately. The only option the oppostion really had to beat Cav was a breakaway and the Brits had no answer to it. Was it complacency, naivety, or just fatigue from the effort on le Tour?

    :duh:

Talk about completely missing the whole point. It was an amazing symbolic gesture honouring fourteen deserving athletes.

Symbolic gestures deserve their place in lighting olympic flames which is lets face it is a rather symbolic act.
