It's by & stars Seth "Family Guy" McFarlane. Started out as a bit "Galaxy Quest: The Series" but has serioused up in the last couple episodes.

It is not a spoof. More like Farscape/Firefly level of funny remarks once in a while. It is less serious than TNG, but it is not a parody.

Yes I've been watching it from the beginning (as well as ST: Discovery from the first day), Orville shows promise, it gets the atmosphere virtually bang on, very reminiscent of TNG and absolutely packed with old trek actors.

Every true Star Trek fan hates every new programme with a passion, until a few seasons in. Discovery made several mistakes in the first episodes but there are some trek moments and I'll be watching until it gets worse. I think it's time to accept that trek will be grittier as is the modern fashion. Hopefully they go more in the DS9 direction of gritty and not BSG.

episode 5 was imo the best episode yet and it really feels as tho the series is starting to get its feet. here's hoping Frakes directs more orville in the future.

I watched it thinking it was going to be mainly a comedy, but pleasantly surprised following a TNG kind of vibe tackling issues such as gender reassignment but still having he odd gag. Impressed so far. Though cameo from Liam Neeson? Or was I seeing things.

Also, James Morrison (Lt McQueen from "Space: Above & Beyond") was in last week's episode.

A bit undecided after the first episode, a bit Dr Who’ish with the fending off the Krill. Might need to give it a couple more episides to get into it.

I remember seeing/reading about this awhile back and cringing whilst being also reading about discovery and being interested. How things have changed. I've enjoyed this so far and it's made me laugh a fair amount and I'm very meh about discovery.

I find it interesting how on rotten tomatoes this has been panned by critics but receives high praise from users, while discovery is loved by critics and receives a lukewarm reception from users.

The morons are the ones who swallowed his populist tripe, hook, line and sinker.

    However, back ON topic...

I always give a new show six episodes to grab me, before casting my final judgement. Of the two, Discovery has started stronger, IMO, but The Orville has improved with each episode - sadly the first couple were so weak even constant improvement means the latter episodes are merely passable. I haven't watched episode five yet, nor six (obviously), so there is still hope.

TIL:- After likening the first couple of Orville episodes to Galaxy Quest, I discovered that a "Galaxy Quest: The Series" IS in development!
