Hello All If you're looking for a cheap soundcard, don't buy the SB128 from Tekheads. Utter hell My old ISA soundcard died when I least expected it, so I needed something cheap to keep this PC going, so I found the SB128PCI at tekheads, a bargain at around £10, or at least I thought... Since I've installed it every few seconds it's skipped or jumped. EVEN ON AUDIO CD'S!!!. I try to update the drivers - FOUR different drivers on the Creative site. It skips erratically when IE is running, and skips occaisionally when it's playing a sound/music. What gets me is that it does it even on an audio CD - it shouldn't be doing that - as far as I know, CD's don't need any type of decoding, otherwise the headphone socket on the CD drive wouldn't work. I turned off digital playback in WMP7 to no avail.. Avoid this card at all costs, I wish my ISA card was still alive :cries: This one may be able to play two MP3's at once.. but it shouldn't skip. The isa card was probably only worth a fiver yet It had better performance
i used to have this card, like you, i picked it up because it was cheap. i had the same problem to start with, but i did two things, both of which i had planned to do before proper use anyway. which seemed to fix it. 1st was to disable my onboard audio, an obvious one, but it did jump before i did this. tho from the sounds of it u don't have onboard audio. the other was driver updates. which u also say u have tried to no avail. have u tried using it in another system to see if that has the same prob?
that is quite a good soundcard, but wiht all other creative **** has to be used properly...and u need decent drivers...
I'm using the SB128 in five differnet machines here... 3 winders and two Linux. The winders boxes running 2KPro with MS's default drivers and they perform quite well... And the Linux boxes...well what can i say like anything else 'supported' for Linux...they perform superbly. What OS are you running? Did you make sure your old drivers were deleted from your system before loading the new ones and not trying to be loaded for the new card?
what drivers do I download for the one that tekheads stock? the sockets, unlike the other SB128's, are the same colour as the ones on motherboard on board chips, not blue, green, black, but pink green and yellow... - I suppose this means it's a cheap OEM deal?.
init. so is mine... i think you are being far to general about this card, the card which many ppl use day in day out, no probs. maybe rma your card ? but dont make sweeping statements :-/...
I think my on board sound uses the same creative chip as the sb128 (CT-5880). When I brefly used it I got loads of stuttering/skipping, I never fixed the problem but I didnt try very hard If you are using win2000/xp you could try and disable ACPI, it might not like that.
