Yeah, I did a little round up of interesting stuff on the forums for a while.. http://www.bit-tech.net/news/modding/2009/10/19/forum-modding-update-19th-october-09/1 http://www.bit-tech.net/news/modding/2009/10/30/forum-modding-update-30th-october-09/1 http://www.bit-tech.net/news/modding/2009/12/02/forum-modding-update-december-2009/1
Also, the "Modding" section has gotten less interesting for me personally, as it's less about "tinkering" and more about who-can-throw-most-money-at-a-built. I enjoy custom 3-D milled and laser-cut parts as much as the next techhead but the level of professionality has gotten too high.
I threw a thread up about the CNC verses hand made last year and the general opinion was that is was ok for some and some say not. It would appear now from reading through this thread that there is a divide appearing. I like to do things by hand attillas and and Waynois work speaks for itself. So what happens with the motm and the moty, if it splits how many classes do you end up with?? CNC scratch built, scratch built by hand and then the same for case mods. Thats 4 groups already. As for the way the site is going, I like it as it is, maybe more emphasis on the modding side is needed as thats where this sites roots are.
I didn't say I didn't like the stuff like Dark Blade-I just want to see more of the kids with a crazy idea and some unorthodox modding materials too. We need to find a balance-and we're not there yet. We'll get there, hopefully sooner than later.
I did them through Bindi and if memory serves me right that was about the time of my A2 mock exams, and then I didnt start doing it again afterwards. I'm more than happy to start sending them in again if you want
I think this hits the nail on the head really. Even if we split projects into mods and scratch builds, there'd be another argument for making things even more granular and going for hand-made vs machined. TBH I don't think there's an issue with all projects competing in the same competitions as they do at the moment. Attila has won MOTY for the last two years, with slipperyskip, paultan, Boddaker and SNiiPE_DoGG also on the podium, and I believe I'm right in thinking none of these projects were sponsored or required excessive amounts of CNC machining to build. At most, they only used prizes obtained by winning other competitions and they were a mix of scratch builds and mods as well. As for projects that we feature on the site, again I think we have a pretty good mix although I suppose we could cater more for the smaller projects a bit more.
I don't think he meant it that as there are certain people who don't have access to CNC machine and so forth but can mod or paint the branded cases they have bought. I'd love to see how other people would mod a case that I have recently bought to get idea's Don't get all of us wrong as these are suggestions, we all love the site and the magazine.
Well I don't know if that's entirely true... if the sticky say something irrelevant to their frame of mind (rules, read this first, guidelines, etc) then it is probably not read. I'd be willing to bet if the sticky said FREE MONEY or CLAIM YOUR FREE VIDEO CARD, it would be read every time.
Would be a great thing if the Bit-tech Staff (When you have time I say) Make there own scratch build themselves, I would enjoy that, alot. For example, look at Scan..They built a powerhouse. (Not saying you should copy them or anything but would be nice if we could see how good you guys were at modding )
Arrr, just found this. http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=194620 But it would be nice if Bit-tech did do this, see if it could contend with the likes of L3p Desk and the Tron bike
I post the following link as a point of interest for this discussion. It is not intended to be inflammatory or a 'dig' at bit-tech. I understand that a direct comparison of bit-tech to the site below would be an unfair one. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/...sing-our-commitment-to-pc-gaming-coverage.ars This is the sort of thing I would have expected from bit-tech, not a more 'generic' tech site like AT. I understand that Ars Technica is a bigger publication than bit-tech with more money to splash around and probably more clout when it comes to making demands like that from publishers, but it strikes me as odd that a 'generic' tech site like Ars Technica is willing to do this, yet we still see console-review after console-review on the originally PC-enthusiast-focused bit-tech, interspersed with iPad/iPhone games and the occasional PC-centric review (such as The Witcher 2, which isn't multiplatform yet anyway). It just seems to lack focus, which is something a site like bit-tech should have in my view to retain its loyal readership, instead of trying to be yet another generic tech site. I'm aware that posting this will come across as somewhat inflammatory, but the reason I do this is to point out precisely why bit-tech isn't my first stop for reviews these days, despite being fond of the writing styles and personalities here. Ars Technica isn't my first stop for reviews either, even though I also like Ben's review style and attitude; and if I look at it cynically I can say that the link above may just be lip-service to curry favour from the PC gaming community for their site, too. I just wish we could see this kind of thing from bit-tech. Solid, uncompromising commitments to the core readership that bit-tech originally appealed to. I'm not saying there should never be console/mobile game reviews on bit-tech, but they always felt misplaced to me to begin with. -- On a lighter note and in appreciation of the fact that you guys have been listening to your readers: The reintroduction of Mankz' modding summaries is very welcome and a big step in the right direction towards reclaiming a sense of community and reinforcing the ties of bit/CPC with that community I think. Thanks both to the decision makers to and Mankz! I'd also like to note that there's been a string of PC game reviews here lately, and whether it's coincidence or as a result of this thread, it's another welcome occurrence.
I had noted that Mankz was back. Still here if anyone wants anything done (I can't complain and not offer to help. Not in my nature.)
