I think ATi's strategy is very clear here. They know that the 465/470/480 are no real threat to their position at the high end of the market. The only area that nVidia has a foothold is with the 460 GTX, and they have very aggressively targeted that price point with these cards.

I will wait to see what the 6900 cards are up to. Or I might hang onto my 5850 until nvidia release something new and exciting.

same here, also can't wait to see how well gtx580 will do.

need a 2GB card...... i frown upon all these cards with only 1GB of memory, while low end cards that struggles to draw a 3D image are equipped with 3GB of memory. i really, really hope 6970 will come out with 2GB of memory for regular edition.

More like the 5830 and 5850 market with those prices.

Wish they were in the range of HD5750/5770 price wise.

Will be playing with one of these badboys next week when i build my friends new rig.

    I'd hope so!

Previous generation high end to new/current generation mid end usually isn't much of a difference, if any. It'd be like going from a 4870 to a 5770, not really worth it. Just so happens that with this generation the two cards retain the same last three digits, which is likely why the author clarifies that a 5850 is still a card to keep.

Might be due to those cards still being on the market. Release a card which is 100% better than one of your previous cards, and at the same price, and you'll never sell any more of the previous card. Once the full 6000 series is out we might see the prices drop to what we expect of their labelled markets.

I was perfectly happy with my 5970 until now. Unless something goes horribly wrong, it looks like I must have the 6970x2/6990.
Or be sensible and wait for the 7xxx or whatever Nvidia offers...? *Insert gratuitous swearing here*

i am still happy with my 460gtx as the 6xxxx series does not like AA in games at all, and i know that i will never get driver issues which has always been a big problem for ATI (now AMD)

but i do what to know how well the 6xxx series overclocks, as a bit of a tweak on the 460 and it beats the 6580 when AA is enabled but can the 6580 keep up?

So tempting I've ordered one and even splashed out for Saturday delivery. It's replacing my HD4870 so I'm expecting a fair old performance jump.

    *hopes Friday goes quickly*

Seems from these few benchmarks (by that meaning, can't say for sure at all, but it's possible) that the GTX460 seems to catch up to a very similar level once AA is added into the equation. If we factor in overclocking, the GTX460 is still very competitive; of course though, we'll need to see how the new ATI cards overclock first.

AMD 6870 and 6850 details released

    Hi guys,

I spotted this official review that just went live on pc perspective.

    http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=1022&type=expert&pid=1

I have only glanced through this. Looks like a decent competitor to the 460 if priced right. It is certainly not the higher end card I had held some hope for a few days back however ...

i like this revision of the cowling (?) on top of the cooler. looks like they put a little more thought into the asthetics this time rather than making something just to keep the card cool.

noob time: what are those little ports?

It's all good under the GPU hood. When I got my 5770 I was hoping to add another one in maybe a year when the prices drop enough. Guess I won't have to wait a year!

You never know what's around the corner so pick the card you want and be happy with it!

Okay well did ati just pawn nvidia? i mean the 6870 is a little faster then the 470gtx its like 2% slower then the 5870 and only $20.00 us more then the 460gtx.

I will be placing my order soon =]

anyone want a evga 460 gtx 768mb superclock?

if you own a 460 its a pointless upgrade as the 6870 isnt loads faster

dont get me wrong it looks a good card for a good price but anyone with good 4xx series or 58xx isnt really gunna benefit

your looking at about 10-20%~ increase in performance

i doubt you will get more than £100 for your 460 since brand new your looking at £120

so the 100+% increase in cost to upgrade will get you 10-20% extra performance doesnt really seem worth it to me.
