People say many words out of habit to be honest.

"I don't mean to be rude but"........... < this gives a licence to be rude cause you've said that.

"well basically what happened was"...... < Is there a detailed version of your story?

"you know what I mean" < say this when having trouble expressing yourself.

I seem to think when some one starts a sentence with ..well basically or actually.. its a lie fabricated to get that said person out the mire
And when they finish with you know what I mean, its opening up the lie to the other person to get enrolled with .. I open many conversations with I dont mean to be rude (what I mean in reality is, I am rude I just dont mean to be, but care less about the person I am about to insult)

Actually, I'm not sure that's true. You know what I mean?

Yes, ffs. Btw, I'm just dying to see someone put ffs in a work email. The most controversial acronym I've seen so far is YNWA, which was in a guy's sig.

Nothing wrong with shorthand - I use IMO and TBH a lot, or at least I think so. IDK.

Now when somebody posts something here that resembles a Blackberry conversation between two 14-year-old girls, THEN we have a problem, K?

    Thx ♥ wb, luv u ♥ xxxxxxxxx

More annoying is the use of the word "like" Especially in writing or lyrics because then there is not even an excuse for its use as a filler word can be enacted for its use for the written word since the written word is pre concieved.

I think I have used it unnecessarily in speech the odd time. But when your sat on public transportr looking out the window hearing some gossipy bint spouting down the phone " and hew was like... then she was like... and I was like Oh my gawd... it was like amazing cos I like got like an E in GCSE english cos i like used like every fourth word now ive like got to do it all again an i was like oh myyy gaawwwd " Then rpobably gets off the phone saying by "C" and gets on the phone to "B" "hi B, Oh my gawd that C is like such a bitch"

Seriously when out for a day out of four bus rides at work/ school times you'll hear at least oneperson such as that. Is that what people do with their gift of speech and clear thought. Say like every three words and talk about unnecessary, hurtful and frankly mercenary gossip.

I wonder sometimes if such people are actually sentient anymore. :sigh:

    Your Nan was Average.

I've never felt the need to use acronyms in forums, but in skype/FBchat/msn conversations I often use iirc, afaik, imo, idk, ymmv, wtf, lol, tbh, tbf, etc., etc. (See what I did there?)

They're inoffensive. They only get annoying, I think, when they're excessive, when people fall back on them constantly: people who pepper their online text with "lol" as a sort of "I'm really not taking this seriously it's all cool guys, love and peace" self-conscious sycophantic thing. Or people who use "tbh" or "imo" ALL the time, whenever they say anything.

It's kinda like swearing: used in good context, and sparingly, it's valid language. Used to excess, or mindlessly, it's obnoxious and irritating.

It's a term of phrase some people use when typing as it saves typing the whole phrase, it's got nowt to do with people lying or anything else and typing IMO or TBH simply saves space by using commonly abbreviated terms.

Me, I hate reading huge paragraphs of folks rants. It's much easier on the eye to read something more concise, so abbreviating commonly used phrases is more 21st century, so get used to it your posting on a technology site!
