Fps in VR is viable one of Sonys main games will be a fps title, it will be years before a PC AAA fps title is designed for VR that much is true. Off all game types you listed none are that interesting to most. Easy way to sell rift Star Trek or Star Wars VR planets and Ships job done. Personally think Sonys VR will have a better selection of games for it than PC will. Sony can design games specifically for VR and force all its first party titles to have support for it. Gran Turismo will surely sell VR by itself for Sony. PC will get probably less games and more VR experiences.
You do realise that it's up to the developers / publishers to determine what is 'high' for each title. One game may have a low/medium/high/ultra setting where the first three are really close together and ultra brings the FPS down to single digits on most systems. Another title may have a really nice looking 'low' setting. Personally, having gamed from the crazy 8bit days today I care more about enjoying the limited time I get to play a game rather than being upset about cranking back the settings a bit.
i dont know any games that look any good on low. But its not just that, its when i pay for a game i want to be getting the full experience from it or close to. Thats not to say i wont play old games what now look like trash, i love witcher 1, KOTOR and so on.
PC gaming has always had the game should be played at max settings 60fps minimum. If it didn't have there would be little to no sales of the Nvidia 970+ Or the AMD equivalent as its just not required for gaming at 30fps at 1080p. Intel and AMDs own onboard graphic chips are just about good enough if the engine is good, GTA 5 will run fine on medium at 1080p. VR will drive high end gpu sales which AMD and Nvidia both badly need. The new gpus are expensive to make and will require decent sales if either company is to see a profit. The low end £100 gpu from Nvidia and AMD might be enough next gen you just never know. VRs CPU requirements will likely not go far in the next few years. It's graphic requirements will though. If Star Citizen is a oculus rift shop title expect a minimum requirement to be a pretty high end next gen gpu if you want to play it. A 970 is not enough above 1080p as it is. A 980 through the section tested got 23fps average at 1440p. The funny thing about that game is its hard limited to 60fps currently as the cryengine it's based on physics processing requires that limit to function.
For those with the power like 980ti, SLI 2x980ti there are going to be the cream da la cream top end games and that is going to be a hotly contested area since it is easy to take a real passion of art expression about VR and want to really throw down the hammer to others, if you have a 970 your going to be good to get a nice experience out of a new rift, but for those with the budget and since the rift cv1 has such an apparent nice panel in it (nice to know MOST of the large amount of money we are spending on the rift is for just that, delicious next gen VR hardware and technologies) I prefer it costs £500 vs costing £250 tbh, heck justify the reasons why and go ahead and bump the price up to £750 IMO no body here has even made this point! Rift is short on FOV of star VR lets remember that FOV can still get improved, the horizontal, I don't know if there is going to be any improvement visible if the hz goes up to 120 over 90hz I know that 75hz was a HUGE night and day improvement over 54 to 60fps. Its going to start getting really interesting once these nice Oculus Rift Cv1 start hitting door steps and getting plugged into peoples gaming PC's, we are going to get a good gauge on how it is between a 970 and a 980ti, I actually bought I think it was future mark on steam since it is having a VR benchmark feature or it will be released soon?? to me the 980ti is a next gen card compared to the 970/980 in performance, its a beast and its a shame the price of the 980ti is not down at the 970 area, its an impressive benchmark in performance, I am obviously wrong some how but to me the 980ti has just enough performance to reach these high 90fps requirements and deliver enough grunt to have some bells and whistles on. I will defiantly be glad I have a 980ti once the rift arrives and truth of the matter is it would be really picture perfect if every one had this card to deliver a VR experience with extra power behind to turn on those extra nice items to the games. Right now I can go and play any VR game with a 980ti but instead I am taking an early night, taking my 3.0x boots reading glasses and reading my book don quisote needing to cut back on computer useage in my life in work and home just as VR is about to hit..
I reckon the price is about right. If it really takes off then it will likely come down considering the competition. Having tried a version of VR I can see why all the hype. I will get one when it has bedded in somewhat. I do not believe some of the nonsense about never needing a monitor/screen to play games again. Video games didn't stop people playing cards or board games, but it will be an excellent addition to the entertainment pool! Looking forward to seeing the reviews/bit-tech forum feedback (the latter being more valuable) before paying out for one. The future is here:
Obviously that is red dwarf but is it my fav episiode "better than life". That was s flipping awesome red dwarf episode, some one find that episode and post it, it was really great man. Edit got it, what a great show so long ago now but does not seem it If you like VR watch this
Rig upgrade to Oculus-capable Given the spec of the PC I run (see signature) am I right in thinking I'd basically juat need to upgrade the GPU (to what card?)? I'm not going to run out and buy an Oculus etc with the price where it is, but in due course I'd love to and want to start thinking about PC spec now and not rush into it. Also, is there a list of games (like Alien: Isolation, Elite Dangerous) that will play through an Oculus TODAY (admittedly with the set-up tweaks detailed on various blogs/web sites)? Thanks.
If you want to play games at max now and get an oculus later, get a Fury X/980 Ti. If you're currently happy with what you're playing, and will get an ovulus when the price drops, wait till the next gen of cards to be released.
If you got through the oculus site, click the 'preorder' link there is a tool you can download to tell you what parts of your system would need to be replaced to meet the recommended specs.
im afraid you would have to upgrade your GPU and possibly your CPU for it to be worth while getting a rift. Even for partnered apps and games.
Elite is not oculus supported as of today it was disabled a few weeks back you need a old version to play in VR. No reason was given for this, Most of the big titles are not 1.0 compatible as of today and only the games on oculus store will officially be guarenteed for day 1 launch. Whilst it's expected Elite will be ready it's not a certain thing. Cv1 what your buying will only work with 1.0 or above games nothing below this is supported and from what's been said nothing below this will work. Rift by Christmas this year will have a much more confirmed games list. March April will likely just be the 3 titles that are on the Oculus store page as it will take Developers time to fix there games for VR. With them not been paid to do this it will be when it's done it's done unfortunately.
it came in alsmost instantly parge, time stamp on confirmation was. I completed my order around 17minutes past 4pm From: Oculus Customer Support <support@oculus.com> Date: 6 January 2016 at 16:25 Subject: Your Order From Oculus Hi (my name) Thanks for your order! This email confirms that we've received your preorder of the Oculus Rift. Order Number: 6130000287REMOVED
Just after I asked this Oculus put up a post about how their email confirmation system was buggered and a load of people haven't got one. I guess I'm one.
it would really nice if there was some way to get an idea of how many fokes have ordered one here, like the bitsec ship roster thing but anom? Along with the gpus fellow bit tech'ers are taking to battle its FPS.
We'll, for the first few months I'm taking the GPU in my sig. That's only changing when Pascal/Polaris comes out, or I somehow manage to afford a 980ti after dropping the cash on the Rift (ouchy!)
news note.. Oculus Rift Pre-Order ETA is Now June for New Orders There’s been a serious demand for pre-orders of the consumer Oculus Rift since going live Wednesday, and if you haven’t thrown your credit card at Oculus yet, you may be waiting until as late as June to get your hands on one. Oculus founder Palmer Luckey tweeted before pre-orders went live Wednesday that there’s “no chance of Rift pre-orders ‘selling out’ [and] we will keep taking pre-orders for a long as people want EVE: Valkyrie.” This was however before a massive outpouring of support sent the pre-order queue back to June. The first wave of Rifts are due on March 28th to customers in over 20 countries Luckey told Polygon in an interview that “[w]e sold through a lot faster than we expected […] I can’t talk about numbers, but we sold through in 10 minutes what I thought we were going to sell through in a few hours, which is one of the reasons the site was beginning to buckle.” In fact, web traffic to Oculus’ store front was so heavy when the pre-order counter finally hit 00:00, the site went down for more than a few tense minutes. There is a small silver lining in the mad rush for pre-orders though. Some customers “may see their ship date move forward as fraudulent orders are weeded out,” said Luckey. Customers yet to pre-order may not be so fortunate though, as the June ship date has held since this morning. Edit: If nothing else, this will be a go to game if nothing else advanced is available.. Lunar Flight, shipping nice DLC to match with the CV1 release, cant help but guess palmer was so impressed they had to have got him a cv1 early? http://www.roadtovr.com/new-lunar-flight-images-reveal-detailed-cockpit-makeover/
