I don't drive, so no, I haven't noticed anything as of yet.
However I know several people who have done this in loads of different cars with similar weight and power, and they've noticed.
Sod knows how much i've shed tbh!

I wasn't being that defensive, tbh Pook, cos it was you who posted it, I was shocked you'd say that.
I thought you understood cars and stuff. Obviously I musta seen your post wrong.

Oh I understand cars alright... just never looked into the practicalities of doing such a thing, because tbh, it's NOT practical for me... I need back seats, and like my creature comforts too much. I'm well aware of the gains to be made by losing weight, but wasn't sure how much you could shed from a DIY point of view.

I suppose it depends on the car in question. I suppose you've gained, or lost rather, the equivalent of a skinny passenger, so in a car that's not particulalry powerful it would make quite a difference. I know I can feel a difference in performance when I have a bit of a fat passenger in mine, so shedding the weight will be noticable alright. That's my guess anyway. I bet you've shaved half a second off the 0-60. Will be interesting to see how it compares to the stock times when finally drive it.

I bet you save fuel too.

Re-reading my post I can understand why you were defensive actually. The brevity of it could be taken as sarcasm. It genuinely was just that: "Why?" Does doing all that actually gain enough to make it worthwhile? Just curious. Hope so, cos that's a load of work for sod all if not!

    Thats more like it. :)
I know its not the most practical thing, but I can live without! I love cars like this.
I can't wait to start driving it tbh!

    Don't worry mate.
    I'm hoping i'll gain something myself! :D

Just thought of something else too. Noise. Just realised that without carpets and soundproofing, I bet it's noisey as hell. I couldn't live with that. If I had a car just for the track, you can bet your ass I'd strip it, but the noise thing alone would drive me crazy.

very curious now though. Post times when you drive it. Pity you didn't have a chance to time it WITH the stuff in really.

    :D You love it really.
Yeah the noise is something that not everyone will enjoy.
I watched a vid of that caged VTS, and his sounded just like a rally car you watch on WRC. Group N engine mounts do that ;)
Plus his exhaust is rather loud. (I'll avoid this)

    I'll post vids/times/pics/pr0n. ;)

That, and the fact that there's very little transmission loss in FWD cars :D.

    VTR? Why not a VTS?
    Insurance?

Not slagging off the car, just curious.

First car. Yeah, I can't afford to insure a VTS.
However, this engine won't be staying to too long once i'm driving.

Eventually, this will be after a good year or so, a VTS or GTi engine. (Both identical).

They aren't that bad on insurance tbh. Not after you have no claims to back it up.
And yeah tunable like hell. Quite a few routes to take :)

After 5 hours sleep and a fair bit of lager (for me - hardly drink) We started work on the mission that was "dash action".

Plan, remove dash to remove all soundproofing and general rubbish.
Then, Cut dash and put back in :p

Started with the arse-of-an-airbag, took us ages to get off, Bill deciding brute rage was the way forward (which worked).
And then the easy bits, removing dash and plan went as planned. ;)

    Anyway, pics...

The mess (style whores, don't look!)

    Bingo!

Not bad if I do say so myself.
More pics from Bills phonecamera, since mine died :/

    So, Comments/abuse? :D

Looking good! Really great project. Although I wouldn't want this for my daily road car.. especially not in the winter or/and long drives. But good for you! :)

    Good luck !

And yes.. weight does make a huge difference. 70kg is about 9% of the weight.. that's quite alot. The performance increase will be noticable.
