    White goes with everything...

Anyway, some most useful looking suggestions coming in here and I'm a gonna be heading straight out tomorrow to get me some T/Sal to see how that gets on for starters.

P'raps I don't have 'dandruff' - I thought it was a generic term for flaky scalp, but my scalp rarely itches. I don't know what triggered it but I did go through a stage at uni of bleaching my hair and then, when I accidentally turned my hair eminem yellow I shaved it off and have been shaving it ever since, and the flakes started somewhere around that time, so maybe it's just eternally dry and needs a bit of TLC.

BT desperately needs to expand its thread tags - the current line-up is pretty limiting - everything's either LOL or educational.

And here I thought we were going to express our opinions on the differences between supermarket milks.

I hope you get it sorted out.

How often do you wash your hair? When I had it I probably did mine once every 3 days (not my proudest time) and that was when it was at its worst- very dry. As I said, I now wash it once a day with H&S and it's really wetted up. Haven't had it for a couple of years or so now.

Second for Head and Shoulders. About the same price as any other shampoo, smells nice, works a treat for me. After roughly a week of using anything else the 'ruff comes back so I've been using it constanty for a few years now.

They also make large refill bottles if you're set on a few month's supply and want so save a little money.

I don't know what it is about Head & Shoulders but it makes my hair smell a really strong, musty, greasy smell. The more frequently I use it the quicker my hair begins to smell weird. Don't know if it's a chemistry thing or what but one of my mottos has long been that if you can smell yourself then you smell too much, so I've avoided H&S for years.

Frequency of hair washing isn't fixed, but very rarely do I wash it two days in a row, always assumed that would dry it out more.

Okay, this is what you want to try. It is not a shampoo. It's a spray in leave in treatment at the roots that you can gently massage into your scalp (best at night before you go to bed). But don't spray too much.

    http://www.aveda.co.uk/product/5303...ent/Scalp-Remedy-Dandruff-Solution/index.tmpl

If your scalp gets itchy too from the flaking dandruff it'll ease the itching too.

You should see an improvement in 1-2 weeks. Once it's under control (hopefully a month) you can cut down from the daily treatment to a few times a week. I've recommended it to at least half a dozen people, including one of our company directors, and it's solved all their dandruff problems.

If that doesn't solve it then it is a doctor job.

I'd also think about changing shampoos if I were you. Some have high concentrations of Sodium Laurel Sulphate, which is an industrial strength cleaner which will dry out your scalp more, so pick a more gentle moisturising one. (One particular brand known by hairdressers to strip natural oils out has a number in its name.)

In fact Aveda do a great range of shampoos too which although more expensive you only need a tiny amount of so it lasts much longer, unlike high street names that you need to use much more of.

Not a scientist here (but an engineer in the making). My personal opinion is that H&S is a very aggressive detergent such that it strips your scalp of its natural oils. Reaction, glands secrete more to replace it.

    Same problem here.
I tried every anti-dandruff/flaking product I came across, ranging from Head'n Shoulders to the more expensive pharmacy remedies to no avail. Nothing seemed to work. Then I got a tip that I can't remember the source of, and that was to soak my scalp with lemon juice (not the bottled stuff mind you, a fresh lemon) and rub it in there really well. It stings like nothing else, but a couple of treatments and the problem had more or less gone away completely.

Now I'm flake free, but I do experience a relapse from time to time, at which point I repeat the process with the same result. I also use a fairly oily shampoo and conditioner (Oil of Argan) which I suppose also helps keep my scalp from drying out too much. I don't know if this will work for you, but for me it did.

Sounds more like dry skin to me. Being a baldy it happens to me especially this time of year so slap some moisturizer on it and it goes away.

Yep, I keep my hair shaved at a #1 and rub baby oil into my scalp after my shower - see, I found that it's the hard water that sets mine off.

When going away to places with soft water, mine disappears completely, so now I just get on with it and hit the baby oil.

Very interesting. A range of options at different levels of investment. In the interests of money-saving I'm going to work from cheapest up, starting with the baby oil cos I think we've got a stash of it somewhere. Updates to follow.

I thought this was going to be another 'yoghurt' thread too...

I used H&S a year or two back, but I had noticeable dandruff. Switching to Vosene has fixed that problem. I would recommend it if you have already tried H&S with no results.

    Dat cream.

Back on topic (damn you Shirty), H&S as definitely thinned out my hair. I do have to gel it back to stop it going everywhere as it's really limp and fluffy now. Problem is, I need to use the stuff.
