Installed onto my NUC while I rebuild my main rig. Little confusion between the Intel driver utility update and windows update between which vga driver is the latest. Also don't appear to be able to find a driver for one smbus device, no idea what it is though. Machine is running fine though for now.

Anyone else found that Windows Update on Win 7 has gone all screwy now that it's always trying to give you 10?

Just run it today as I've not for a while, and don't get the messages anymore in the task bar, only the WMX one. Even though I de-selected Win 10 upgrade, the window still still says 'downloading Win 10' and messages progress bar statuses associated with that, not anything to do with the updates I'd selected, :D.

Still wimping out of upgrading at the moment on my main rig, :D, just got everything working nicely and don't want to potentially ruin it for a little while longer, :D

The Windows 10 update is under the Optional Updates tab. Uncheck it, and it doesn't download.

You can also do the normal 'right-click Hide Update' thing.

I could be mistaken but if it's trying to download W10 it could be blocking the download of other updates, if it helps the last non-W10 associated updates were kb3080079 and kb2999226 in September, since then they've just re-released some updates associated with foisting W10 on people.

I did un tick Win 10, but the progress bar and windows update window still had the Win 10 text on it, it didn't install or download Win 10, just the update window was wrong.

Might just take the plunge and upgrade today, :D.

having looked through what I've got on here, it's only really Steam, Origin and uPlay, which all look to work okay on 10, I know I'll have issues with uPlay but that's to be expected.

Well there we go, I knew it wouldn't be easy. Installed fine , then got stuck at setting things up screen, had to hard reboot, then got stuck at the next screen, setting apps up, and now it gets stuck at the welcome screen and the spinning circle stops. It'll boot in safe mode, I disabled speedfan and a few other startup progs that weren't needed, but it's still stuck at the welcome screen.

So now I'm stuffed, can see I'm going to have to reinstall 7, as I'm not going to be able to roll back as I can't boot.

Just tried again, kept moving the mouse on the welcome screen and it booted.

Still not correct though, screen is all wrong, can't click on start button, notifications won't open.

I found a few bugs when I upgraded from Windows 7. I then did a clean install and everything now works fine

Just preparing for a clean install now.

Started it, entered the key that I got from the upgrade, which had activated, and the install tells me the key isn't recognized.

Cancelled and rebooted into the upgraded Win10 to check again, got the key correctly. Try to sign into my hotmail account to link the licence to that too, and it won't let me sign in. Click Sign in with a microsoft account, window pops up with "Just a moment", then vanishes.

As I've not made any hardware changes, it should activate still shouldn't it, just skip entering the key on the install procedure then let it do it's thing once installed and booted?

Why did MS have to make this so awkward, why couldn't they have just given a unique key out for each upgraded key instead of using a generic key for everyone and linking into hardware, if they do that why bother with the generic key.

Fresh install seems to be much better, boot speed is amazing. Appears to be activated fine too.

Can I get the old Metro IE browser back, this seemed much better for touch screen, I have put my tablet in tabelt mode but explorer is a bit crap for touch now. Sliding in from top and bottom and swiping left and right worked well in 8.

Been using it for two weeks now, and I must say the transition has been much easier than with Win8.1.

Thta said, can't find a lot of stuff, like the device manager, unless by using the search.

Or WIN+X. That menu alone is worth getting rid of 7.

That's probably the main reason I rolled back, fullscreen metro IE with swipe gestures is much better than non-fullscreen no swipe gestures Edge. Your best bet - use Chrome. It'll hog your ram but the gestures work fine.

Does anyone know if a USB stick with a Win 10 iso on can still be used for storage and yet retain the boot functionality of the iso? I was thinking of putting the 4GB iso on a 32GB stick, but then it occurred to me that it might have to be the only file on there to be bootable, wasting the other 28GB.

And is it just one iso for all versions of Win 10 and the installer decides for you (obviously according to what is currently installed)? How does this work on a clean install - can you only install over the top of an existing OS, be that a 7/8/8.1 OS to upgrade or a 10 OS that’s been upgraded but that you now want to clean install over?

Not sure about your second query, but I do know you can still use a bootable usb to store files. I've done it plenty of times.

    Ah, nice one - cheers.

Follow-up question - should there in that case only be one bootable iso on the stick (plus your other files), to avoid confusing the system on boot?

Yes, but put it all in a folder so it doesn't get lost/confused with the stuff from the windows gubbinz

IIRC, no, the Media tool creates an image based on the system you're running it on if you pick 'upgrade this PC now', so if you ran it on a 64-bit Pro version, it creates 64-bit Pro image.

If you pick 'create installation media for another PC', you're then asked to pick Language, Version and Architecture... and it creates the relevant bootable image...

Good to see I am not alone, I moved off of using Edge too as the performance was absolutely sucky on my atom, whereas IE desktop seemed much faster than they were on Win8. (might also coincided with a laptop clean up of installed apps mind you.)

I don't want to rollback, I'd rather find a solution as my next machine will probably be a surface and so I will have 10 again.

Its quite annoying as I was all up for buying a new machine but the removal of this ruins the tablet side of things for casual browsing, making me think should I just move back to a proper tablet OS on a tablet, like Android.
