I'd gotten the windows 10 key after the upgrade, and even putting that in on the fresh install, it said it wasn't valid. The CD Keys seem to be obsolete now but they're still there for some reason. Either that or the Win10 keys are kept somewhere else and all the software available atm can't get the proper key and just gets the 'fake' key,
when it asks for the key just skip and carry on with install, it will reconise the hardware from when you did the upgrade and activate
So my htpc installed some updates this evening and it's messed up the picture size so it's falling off the edges of my tv. Tried updating nvidia drivers but did nothing. Worked fine last night, no settings on the tv correct it either. Any suggestions?
Try googling your TV's model number plus edid.bin This file tells the PC what resolutions and refresh rates your "monitor" can handle correctly. Add it to your display driver in device manager.
It's not a res or refresh issue. It's at 1080p and 60hz, as it was when I set it up, as it was when it was my main monitor for my gaming rig, as it was last night before the windows update. NVIDIA control panel recognises it and even confirms it as the recommended settings. EDIT: It's now fixed. Don't really know how, but about 20 restarts and 2 more driver sweeps the picture fits the screen. PC's eh. Gotta love em!
If you're on the Insider Preview turn on 'Defer Updates' if you can, latest update [KB3105208] is causing 'PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED' BSODs for me and a fair few others... EDIT: If you do get caught out by it, disabling Secureboot works as a workaround...
I've probably missed something very obvious. but HOW DO YOU SEARCH FOR FILES with Cortana??? Macbook: Command + space and start typing file name. Windows 7: Windows key and start typing file name. Windows 8: Windows key and start typing file name, a few more directional arrows but the file is still displayed. Windows 10: Windows key and start typing, Cortana comes up. Where is my file? Cortana just offers to search the web. Click My Stuff, nothing is found. All I want to do is go directly to "Living Expenses.xlsx" file in my dropbox.
Cortana usually finds my files no problem... though it can be hit and miss as to whether it shows up immediately or if I have to click 'My Stuff'. It is something that needs improving though imo.
If you went trolling through the privacy settings page, you may have blocked Cortana from being able to access local data. If so, you can either allow access, or disable Cortana, or I think WIN+S might still access the previous Search functionality.
Couple more issues I've noticed: - Two SSDs installed with Win 7 Pro on one and same but upgraded to Win 10 Pro (not clean install yet) - Using 10 then going back to 7 often triggers a chkdsk across all disks (also have a 2TB games drive) - Same action has removed the names I gave the drives - Not sure if turning off disk indexing on the 10 SSD (was once told SSDs shouldn't have this enabled) has borked my search functionality, but I hang on searching for even things like msconfig in the Start menu, but then only on random occasions - Edge doesn't support plugins apparently, so no Java = no logging in to work - Other than that, I'm still on the fence. I'm not going to dismiss it yet and I have in fact installed it over the top of my Win 8 2-in-1, but I still prefer 7
The chkdsk being triggered when going from 10 to 7 could be caused because 10 isn't writing/clearing all the transactions to the drives, at a guess it could be to do with 10's quick boot/fast start feature.
My Win10 BSOD'd on me with a "Kernel_auto_boost_Lock..." whatever. The annoying part, it wouldn't recover from previously saved system restore points (gave me the same error), so I had to go the full monty and reinstall from scratch. Reinstalling Win10 with the Win 10 USB_media_creation_tool stick gave me...... Win8.1! (How it managed that is beyond me, as the recoverypartition of my system was erased by Win 10) So I updated that back to Win 10 again, created a new "recovery USB stick" and am now trying to remember what drivers to update how (as the automated driver install doesn't fix a couple of points)
According to the link a bit further up in this thread, the "Fall Update": I hope that the possibillity to select whereto to download anything will return. Firefox does everything I want but won't display a keyboard in tablet-mode It does wonders for my 2-in-1 as well, which is why I use it.
Upgraded a dell OEM win7 licence to a fresh W10 over the weekend using the new ability to activate win 10 with a win 7/8 key. I believe this will be coming out in the fall release. Using the insider ISO here: linky Starting from my W7 install (with all the Dell branding) Installed the prevew W10 Input my W7 key, marked as geniune Rolled back to the general release version of W10 Took a hour or two at the most and it was really simple. As an added benefit all the dell branding is gone too.
Yes, all previously installed bloatware is gone here too, took considerably longer than two hours though, more like 6-8.
Thanks for your tip, but I can't find this local data setting. Ok, I give up. I've turned off Cortana for good. But WHY OH WHY can't I use my arrow keys to select the file I want in the My Stuff screen?!?!?!!? I'm really pissed off about this, why change the perfectly good keyboard navigateable start menu? Windows 10 is still Metro, just slightly less apparent.
It's an SSD, but one of these slow eMMC types. Also, the media creation tool running from a USB2 USB-stick probably didn't help
Does anyone know if the free upgrades become non 32/64 bit dependant? I've got two 32bit and two 64bit Win 7 keys, one of each of which I've upgraded to Win 10. Preferably I'd like them all running 64bit if I can. *EDIT* Couldn't find it on google to start with but a tweak to the search terms produced a result which suggests you can, the Windows 10 licence allows the installation of either 32 or 64bit and isn't limited to one. That's nice.
