I still get DX crashes on GTAV but Witcher has been rock solid. I honestly think there are just a lot of buggy games released nowadays.

You can only equip 2 consumables, then 2 bombs, then 2 items in pockets.

I realise that but what do I put in third spot? And how do I select say chicken legs rather than Swallow?

Press R to use the first consumable and press F to use the second one.

I didn't realise there was a third spot? What does the label on it say?

There are no labels. Just three spots at the left of the game screen. As I say The top is Swallow, Middle is chicken, then there is a third below that one. And I have no idea what goes in that slot or what key to use it if I did.
Thanks for the F tip that is useful.

Think I know what you mean now, it's where the crossbow will go when you get it (just before you take on the griffin).
The tutorial at the start shows you how to use it and I think you get a bunch of tool-tips when you get it too.

Beat the Griffin and it now tell me I have a mutagen but cannot seem to find it in a menu anywhere. Oh and the Griffin was very easy.

Mutagens are in the Character panel, the DNA looking tab.

Games are stupidly complex these days. Think how many lines of code went into Monkey Island and then take ya best guess at games like Witcher 3. Just tracking player choice is IMMENSE. I'm prepared to give a little slack. That said I'm not lucky enough to have a PC capable of highlighting the bugs (read=playing the game at all)...sooo :(

Totally agree and I know its often down to your hardware config etc, I just know that playing GTA is frustrating as I am consistently losing progress, and Witcher has been fine for me.

Oh bro I feel your pain for sure. I just hope your issues are world wide... I say that not to enrage you... I remember Fallout NV being buggy as hell and people losing games saves while the pirate community laughed their asses off.

Must admit I am enjoying the game. It helps that it runs so well as I am tired of games having so many bugs that it is necessary to trawl the interwebnet to find solutions.

I have yet to master combat, alchemy ETC ETC but I suspect that I will get there in the end and the next playthrough will be more fluid.

Third spot is selected by pressing the tab button, highlighting in the selection bar thingy, just like you do with signs. I then found the key to use said item wasnt mapped so had to bind a key to it. I used the letter T.

this meant R, F, T were to use the items... so far.

The crossbow is in mine which I use via the middle mouse button. Will have a look at your suggestion later.

What is it that health regenerates so slowly? I am getting so pissed off trying to beat the botchling and I have swallow potion and grid yet every hit on him takes a tiny bit of his life whilst a hit on me takes a big chunk and then just to make it all the more annoying a little while later a couple of wraiths join the party and me struggling to get health back up.

This is not far into the game so god knows what it is going to like further down the line? I am sure I have enough kit to make a decent sword but have yet to come across a blacksmith in the Velen level.

    Any tips for this beast?

    Don't get hit? :D

The health doesn't seem to last very long, my first Witcher experience and I'm also finding it quite tough at times. Keep having to remind myself not to rush in button mashing.

Using oils, potions, signs and parry are very essential it would seem. Use Thunderbolt potion to increase damage, put oil on blade to again increase damage, use Axii and lots of rolling/parrying.
