$100 for a Hard disk should get me about 250Gb in the uk. Not 20Gb infact I recently got a second hand 20gb Hd for £5.50 (about $8)

IIRC the HDD will be a laptop drive which are generally more expensive than their 3.5" equivalents (see Froogle ). Plus in this case you also need to pay extra for the case and protection (I assume it's going to have some sort of protection if it's going to be portable). Also you can't get backwards compatibility without it so you'd also be paying for that. Finally, since they're making a loss on each console sold, they'll probably increase the price of the add-ons to help recover some of the loss.

So do you have to buy the charger for the wireless remote. They make it seem that way becuase they have an extra battery and power cord for 50 dollars. That and 100 dollars for wireless thats crappy. You can get a access point for less and then just plug into the ethernet port. Im thinking CPU is right there selling the system cheap then saying oh pay bunch of money to get accessories you basically need. I dont think mic. will be losing money since there selling accessories for bunchs of money then having companies making products for 360 have to pay to make them. Wow now that is business.

yea i was wondering about the controller too. and i dont think microsoft are losing that much money on each one. and reading the disscussion hes basically saying the xbox will work without a hard drive but it wont be backwards compatable, you wont be able to save stuff and it wont run as fast bit pointless really. someones gonna buy a core system realise its pointless and have to pay over the odds for a hard drive.

I fear that if the xBox comes out this way and is a hit, that Sony will try and screw us with the PS3 in a similar manner. It sucks that both boxes are going to be released with less capability than was first demo'd.

    Pure garbage.

I disagree Pete - the alternative would have been to launch at US$399 only, and then have everyone complain about it being "too expensive". At least this way, people who want to spend less money have the $299 option if they choose.

The downside is that 360 developers are being told not to create code that *requires* the hard drive, since some gamers won't have it :(

There is also possible irony in the fact that the rumoured backwards compatibility will require the hard drive, yet the people most likely to play their current Xbox games on the new system will be the people who can only afford the $299 bundle and maybe only one new 360 game.

I have also prepared a News Story to clear up the confusion about the hard drive, which will be posted later this morning.

That's shuch a load of ********, tbh. You're going to end up running out of hard drive space because there's going to be developers who says "Oh, well, 20GB is PLENTY of space! It won't matter if we use 500Megs!" I don't know about anyone else, but I simply HATE having to delete games saves from memory cards (or maybe custom maps that they might allow you to build?) to make room for a new game that I bought.

SORRY - in my haste, I appear to have missed the crucial word "not"; now edited in. To clarify, the word is that nearly all Xbox 360 games will NOT require the hard drive, to be fair to those who buy the hard driveless Core System. So even though it is expected many people will opt for the Premium bundle, Microsoft have told developers they are not allow rely on the hard drive being present.

I have read the noteable exception to this will be the Final Fantasy game.

    Sorry for the confusion. :sigh:

So how exactly do you need it? The core system will still play the games, the wired controller will still control, nobody really needs wireless it's just nice to have sometimes. If you can afford it and want it then you can buy it and MS will recoup some losses from making the console just as with the games. And anyway thats what Christmas and birthdays are for, you just ask Santa for a controller.

Has there been any confirmation of US prices? I've seen rumors, but no confirmations...
