One random site, claiming unnamed sources? That happened with the headset rumour, and look how that turned out. Hardware changes this late in the game simply do not happen - these consoles should be on production lines by now, or very shortly. The only thing MS can do to match the PS4 is to increase the number of ROPS on their GPU, which would require a re-design of their entire SOC, increase costs and delay everything. They could, theoretically, overclock the GPU, but then they run the risk of overheating and reduced number of suitable binned parts. Even then an OC isn't going to compensate for 33% less ROPs.
an overclock in the gpu is doable so I would say that quite likely - but the ram increase as goodbytes said wouldn't help a lot. ofc whats your opinion?
I agree, an OC on the GPU is feasible as it wouldn't require a hardware change. It would depend on a few things though: 1) Rumours that MS are having to downclock due to inability to get binned chips are false, and that they can actually get higher bins to meet the overclock requirements. So which is it? 2) Cooling system can cope with added heat. 3) If they want to use higher binned parts, MS will have to accept a reduced number of consoles being available. Overclocking wouldn't also achieve equal performance, just reduce the gap somewhat. It'd be like trying to push a GTX 660 to go as fast as a GTX 770. As for the memory? 12GB would only serve a point to give MS more of an overhead for the HyperVisor. If it's true that they need 3+GB for the OS at any time, then 12GB could possibly be used to give games actual access to 8GB - whereas the PS4 rumour is the OS taking as low as 512MB. This would then be parity - but is such huge amounts really necessary? Apparently the Killzone demo only used 5GB of RAM, and would the 32MB ESRAM be a limiting factor? If you're limited to 32MB max texture size, then filling 5GB might take a while.
After the issues Microsoft have had with the xbox 360 with red ring of deaths issues they will not launch a overclocked gpu on its new console. More memory would also not really help the cause it will take years before games use 8gb of ram. Depending on if the rumours that Microsofts Os needs 2.5gb to 3gb of ram. Coulda swear i heard MS say that performance is not everything in comparison to its gpu lack of grunt when questioned. This would be another total uturn if thats the case. As others have said if they overclock they run into different risks and it still wont be as fast. But then again ive had 1 ps3 and ive had 6 xbox 360s (5 rrod fixed under warranty 1 elite) so you know a bit of reliability would never go a miss on MS part.
Technically it is not an overclock, but higher clocked base specification. It is not like they are launching XBOX One and XBOX One OC. You don't call the stock version of let's say GTX680 as GTX680 OC just because they are running at higher clocks than the pre-production test GTX680 . Shared memory man, shared memory. 8GB, if the above is true, then OS takes 3GB away, 5GB remaining. iGPU need their own memory too, let's say 1,5-2GB. Whoops, we are down to 3GB for game. You don't see the problem ?
the esram part doesn't hinder intel with the GT3e does it - but given we`ve seen the motherboard for the XBone - unless they rig a daughter card in there for the first production run , then its hard to see how they can stuff another 4GB of ram in - but given MS and its inherent bloat ware status , 12GB *might* prove useful (all at 2133 as well)
When the PS3 was coming out there was this ****ing nutter who had pictures of the PCB on ps3forums who was convinced they had intentionally disabled memory, GPU cores etc and that he'd uncovered extra power circuitry that would double the power.
The did disable CPU sections due to yield issues. It was originally meant to run at 3.2+GHz, but ended up at 2.8G. The PCB would have been designed months in advance, so to do a respin for cost down takes several more months. I'm not surprised the original was overspec'd. EDIT: 4K CAPABLE HDMI CABLE! 4K!! Except, they all are. Even my $1 one will do 4K. The one in the box is probably $1 too
Less likely to blow and easier/cheaper to renew if it does blow. Internal PSUs are one of the most common components to fail in desktop PCs; be glad consoles aren't imitating them on this one
It is also easier when distributing internationally to cope with differing power supplies. It also removes a massive heat source from the box and saves on cooling.
Sony are. I get the issues but I'm still waiting to hear from anyone I know that their console failed due to their PSU.
Ahhh looks so good, I want my Dayone Console Now damn it , been pre-ordered for what feels like forever.
Day 1 owners will get a game... for free: Received that in a email from Game, Not that i like football or FIFA, it's a nice surprise. Sam
So just to get this straight xbox one vs ps4. Due to Microsoft changes only difference now is ps4 is cheaper and more powerful? But xbox one has more exclusives. I wonder if Microsoft will do a xbox one bundle without the kinect which would bring price down on par with ps4. Power wise xbox one overclocked so it is closer to ps4. But I want to hear more about the xbox one's cloud computing, as it has the potential to make the xbox more powerful than PCs.
