I haven't really found much to do with thermal compounds. I'm assuming they're a good idea though if I plan to overclock my system.

Can anyone give me any recommendations for what I should be looking for in a thermal compound ... or tell me if I'm wasting my time, if I am? Looking to overclock my i5-750 on an MSI P55-CD53 (with a Titan Fenrir cooler) and want to make sure I have a solid cooling system in place.

Arctic Cooling MX-2, Arctic Silver 5 spring to mind as excellent 'non-exotic' pastes.

Basically you can buy the Classical Thermal Grease like Zalman or coolermaster, if you want a better conductivity use the Artic Silver or Ocz Freeze , and for a bit higher the Ic Diamond 7.

The only recommendation I can say is 'Dont Jeez your thermal paste over the CPU like a Kid with a Mustard Pot' it only need a tear nothing more.

IC Diamond 24 Carat. Saw a 5C decrease on IDLE vs AS5. And almost 10C decrease on Load (IBT) IC Diamond 24 Carat vs AS5. It also lowered my GPU temps by 6-7C on IDLE and 10-15 on load.

Ill agree with that, It works great but what a PITA. I used it once but now use AS5 its just so much easier to work with.

In my personal experience I would say avoid the MX-3, found it impossible to work with, went back to AS5 and can't see myself ever changing again.

What do you mean by 'work with'? All you have to do is put a small blob/line on the CPU and attach the heatsink, at which point it's only the temperatures that matter.

I prefer to spread mine evenly over which ever surface I'm applying it to which requires a level of 'workability' in the paste.

AS5 is one of the best just blob or a line in the middle and twist left then right and straighten and then tighten the cooler works best for me , Though I used the diamond one on the build in my sig I found that warming it up first was the best way with that one it's really thick , people tend to use too much TIM

I like Ceramique, but AS5 is widely considered the best.

And, as stated above, usually the problem is that people tend to use too much... You only want to barely coat the surface. Ideally you wouldn't want to use any at all and have perfect metal to metal heat transfers.

I use the diamond stuff, it look like grey Mud. After application with my after market Cooler, I noticed a few degrees of difference. But I dont think it is significative, for the price of 1.5g of Diamond compound you can get 3.5g of Artic S5 which is very good too. I take it because nobody use it loll
