I have a old Radeon 9000 I would like to change the cooling but the stock cooler was glued on with some sort of thermal stuff.
I got the Cooler of but the glue stayed on the core.

Any idea how to get it of? Its really hard so rubbing is not an option!

    thanks

Would some very careful work with the soldering iron melt it off?

Woah, I would really avoid using a soldering iron. Does not seem wise in the slightest. Isopropnol alcohol along with a hair dryer is as far as I'd go.

Depends if you make sure you dont apply much heat to it when you are close to the chip you should be ok

hair dryer and gloves so you can wiggle it. If that dosen't work freezing and then trying to prize off with a flat head screwdriver may. but that has a much higher change of damage.

first use alcohol or something like that to soften it, then carefully scrape off with a razor blade

Thanks for the replies. I tried nailpolish remover as it was the only thing i had sticking around. Didnt really work :wallbash: . The stuff didnt get any softer.
I gone try using a razorblade and give the core a gentle scrub.

    Wish me luck!

    The freezer trick should work.
Stick the card in a freezer bag and into the freezer til its frozen (duh :D).

Then the stuff should become more brittle and make it easier to remove with a razor or similar. :)

Scrape off as much as you can with a razor blade then attack it with the your nail polish remover, should do the trick. Also, you may not believe this but Mr Sheen sprayed on and left for 10 minutes will get rid of the crud but you'll have to make sure you then clean the core with alcohol as Mr Sheen will leave the core waxy.
