Hmmm, isnt the fan pointing away from the duct? So its acutally sucking out through this. In the diagram its showing it blowing air through the heatsink so maybe a alpha pal wasnt the best heatsink to use as most of use use conventional "blowing" heatsinks. Just hope it works as well as it does sucking or even possibly better pushing.

 

I don't see why it would make much difference if it were sucking or blowing. Its just a piece of tubing, its irrelevent which direction the air travels through it.

But then maybe I'm wrong....

 

This might be a silly question but...if you had 2 TDM's would they make a 90 degree tube? It looks that way but I wanted to make sure..

 

for the heatsink he's using, the orientation is correct

the heatsink (One of the Alpha PAL series) is supposed to have the air drawn through it instead of blown onto it for optimal use (which is partly why they work so well... its pulling air through so you tend to lose the large dead spot from the hub)

granted, the performance change between sucking and blowing is only a few degrees...

 

No, It won't make 90 degrees. But it'd be pretty close

I can see how it would help with the centre dead spot, but as the fan is in effect blowing at an angle, won't all the air be forced to the top point of the bend? I mean the air is still being sent straight, it can't bend!! I think your better off getting a 80>60 mm adapter!

 

My guess is that an 80>60 adapter would do the same job, but the fact that the Alpha needs an 80x80 fan mounted you would need an 120>80 .. and that again will resault in a more airflow and more noice.. Wouldn't it ??

Surely the air would follow the curve of the pipe? I mean, thats the point of making things aerodynamic. If the duct had an abrubt 90 degree bend (Think the side of a box), then it would hit the edge causing turbulence and would probably negate any improvement you had achieved by removing the 'dead spot'. However, being a gradual curve, I don't see this as being too much of a problem

Well, I'm not sure how good you would look illuminated, but the duct looks pretty nice

is it blowing or sucking, if it is sucking no dead spot, sort of like there isnt a dead spot in a garden hose when it has water flowing through it. Blowing, I would think maybe at the very start, but the airflow isnt a cylinder its more cone like so I think the whole heatsink would get air, just more to the opposite side.

 

that just wouldnt happen. It would create static pressure that wouldnt be directional that's all. Youd loose some flow obviously because its further away but youve assumed air doesnt bounce off the sides of it.
