Are these HDDs any good for my microsever which is acting as a plex media server? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2TB-35-In...ach-Desktop-Internal-Hard-Drive-/330879769581 I was going to buy either WD Green or Reds but these look better on paper but not sure if i should avoid as they may have had a long life already in some Datacentre somewhere? They come with 1 year warranty which gives me confidence i just am unsure if i should spend a few more quid on lower spec but new HDDs or go for these. Any thoughts?
WD RE4 HDDs are designed and made for multi raid NAS and MicoServers, right?.. However, for refurbished drive's, that's a little more than what I would like to spend for 2TB, just my opinion... Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk
I'd be wary of refurb drives. I'd personally buy new or buy used from someone on the forums with a drive or two with warranty remaining. I'm in the market for some 2 TB WD Greens too.
RE drives are the low end of WD's enterprise offering, but a step above most consumer drives. I ran 5 400GB RE drives in a RAID 5 array many years ago, and they were rock solid. I've never had any issues with the 3ish recertified drives I've owned over the years, but it always needs to be a consideration, depending on how important your data is, and how well it's backed up.
Got an RE4 2TB here, it runs quite a bit hotter than my other drives so a fan in front of it is essential for peace of mind. It's the difference between 34c and 50c. Apart from that it's a great drive. The only thing putting me off the green drives is the frequent head parking which means a delay when it unparks as you want it to access data. There is a workaround for this though.
Given my natural wariness of all things Ebay these days, I would be wary of the possibility that they are not new drives. 2TB drives are available on Amazon for only around £5 more.
