On Wednesday I'm off on holiday for a fortnight to the USA, staying with my relatives over there, who live in a place called Germantown not far from Memphis, TN. I'll also hopefully get to spend two or three days in Atlanta, where two of my cousins live. Basically though, having never been to the US before, and knowing very little about this part of America, I don't know what we'll do for the two weeks that we're there, I'm sure we'll find something but I thought it worthwhile to ask here, since plenty of you lot are American and we're bound to have some members from around Memphis. All I know is we're visiting Graceland (not too sure on that but my sister is keen), and where Martin Luther King was killed....so any other suggestions of places to go or things to do whilst we're there would be great
I don't live in this area so I can't give any specific tips. I'm sure you'll find a lot to do though.. But to just give you a heads up about what Graceland is, thats Elvis Presley's mansion. Its his house that you take a tour through.
Got family out toward Memphis but haven't been there in awhile. As for Atlanta, moved away about four years ago. There's aways something to do depending on your interests. There's always these: http://www.atlanta.net/50funthings/ http://www.memphistravel.com/thingstodo.asp
If you mean Atlanta, GA, that is my hoem town. Well some things i recommend are the Zoo(they have Pandas!!!! lol, the waterpark there, forgot the name, and Six Flags.
Not sure if this will interest you, but Atlanta is one of the best/cheapest places in America to get a helicopter lesson. Obviously you wont actually 'learn' to fly, but a 30min lesson (during which you will take control) will cost you under half of what it costs in the UK.
In Memphis, the best thing you can do is eat. There are great BBQ places there. Otherwise, Memphis is pretty crap. Atlanta has some good tourist stuff. Underground Atlanta was pretty decent when I lived there. I think the Coca-Cola museum is there too if that interests you at all.
w00t! i live in memphis!! (actually about ~10 miles from germantown area). what kind of stuff are you interested in doing? let me know what stuff you'd like to do and i'll tell ya if we gots it...
Cheers for the suggestions so far, my sister found out about the coca cola museum already and wants to go. Me, I'd rather try and make it to the Jack Daniels place though saying that, I'm not old enough to drink. Its not like I have any real burning desire to go and do any one particular thing, I was just after some general ideas about any places that you (as a local) think would be worth visiting whilst I'm there! Somewhere nice to go for a walk would be good (yes I know it'll be hot, but I like walking), also any nice restauraunts - I need a great BBQ Steak .
As far as nice restaurants, there's one BBQ place downtown in Memphis but that's been many years since I went and I've forgotten the name. The Jack Daniels place is the east end of Tennessee, Memphis is west and would be one long drive.
For bbq places, I'd recommend trying "The Rendevous" in downtown (this might be the one that SeT was talking about?). Also, go ahead and look around downtown area (Beale Street, Peabody Place, etc. - I'm sure your relatives can give ya a few more specifics). Also downtown is the River Walk that goes along side the Mississippi River. Check that out for a nice walking area (while there, you can walk across a bridge to "Mud Island" - mainly a tourist attraction and quite a small "island"). Also, ya may want to check out Shelby Farms (a fairly good size park), umm... let's think. I'd say the best things are going to be mainly in downtown and midtown areas. Oh, and since you're going to the Coca-Cola Museum, you may also be interested in checking out the Gibson Guitar Factory (it's not just a musuem of guitars - it tells the history of music evolving within the Memphis area IIRC, though you may want to check up on that before/if ya go). And then, of course, there's always "Graceland", the home of Elvis Presley. I've only been once, but it was fairly good (as far as I can remember - it's been a few years though). I'm sure that your family can give ya more ideas and more info. about some of the places too. Let me know what ya think of it all and if ya need any more suggestions or anything!
