I'm guessing you're wanting an external burner (otherwise get an internal one), but yeah, Liteon make very good drives for a very good price and I've heard you can flash the bios in them to 8x

Looks ok. Might want to wait a tad longer for the 8x versions, as 12x are already in the pipelines.
I'm a hardware reseller and know that 8x won't be much more expensive than the 4x.

wow, that pioneer one is damn sechsi, I may have to go with that one.

the main reason I wanted an external one is my current ide drives are awesome and since I have usb2, I thought it'd be pretty cool to use that to its full potential

I probably will wait for 12x so I can get 8x ones for cheaper though :)

i've had problems with poineer DVD burners. If i use cheapo quality discs, the dvd craps out near the end of the cd, the last 400mb or so...
LG seem to suffer the same problem with crappy discs.

Works fine on my friends lite-on ;)'

also internal drives are good for lans, less crap to cart around and no one can steal it (easily)

I know this thread is like two days old but...

Check CNN / Yahoo!, they are coming out with new dvd burners, prices on regular dvd burners will more than likely drop tremendously, and the storage capacity on the new ones r0ck! =) 8.4gb in about 40 minutes or so.. coming from Sony and Pioneer..btw i dont believe they are too expensive either >400, not a bad deal if you ask me

    /me hugs dual layer

I'm planning on waiting for a while for the 8x single-layer drives to get cheaper though ;)

Personally i wouldn't buy a single layer dvd burner cuz to me the point of burning cds (and dvds) is to be able to do a 1:1 backup. but if you feel otherwise then I guess thats you. If the only reason you're getting an external drive is because you wanna keep your 2 samsung drives and you dont have any ide connectors avail then I would buy a pci Ide card and get an internal burner anyway. And if youre set on an external burner then I would suggest buying the cheapest one you can find that still does what you want and the mod it if its looks displease you ;)

Sorry, didn't read the whole thread, so someone might have said this...

Plextor has a x12 burner out now and there is a hint of double densty drives on the horizon.

Not saying you should buy them, they're gonna be EXPENSIVE, but the price of x8 will drop SOOOO much.

Also, take a look to see if it's cheaper to buy an external housing for a normal internal drive.
