What do you think of this hardware for a server would u change anything. Mobo CPU RAM Hard - Drive Richman
4 serving stuff. errr, im guess its not going to be a very big server... It would be ok for doing small jobs but its not particualry powerful, when i think of a server i think dual processors, not AMD 1600. But if you just need a serve for the odd picture and your own small site it should be fine. Usually the internet connection will be your limit, rather than the PC
I'm guessing he means some sort of network server tbh... have a 1gig, 128mb ram here thats been used as a games/file/LAN server for ~ 8 months no probs.....
It isnt a pc that lived in a data center iam not going to have a server in my home with dual xeon processors for god sakes all i want to know is what that mobo is like if anyone has one or if anyone would reccommend another one. Richman
No don't change the hard drive, I have run desktop Maxtors as server drives before they are pretty damn solid tbh.
I have had a maxtor before and they are quiet good from experiance. What board should i change to tho. Rich
Theres nout wrong with the ECS boards IMO, ok they are cheap, but much much better than the PCchips boards..... Cant forsee a massive problem tbh...
Anything, something good though as it's the foundation of your computer and usually the decider whether it is ultimately uber stable or not.
might be tempted to go for http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=3398&GroupID=530 so you could use some old SDram lying around or http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=6123&GroupID=530 or http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=4457&GroupID=526 all have usb2 www.aria.co.uk have Duron 1800's on offer for £29 inc, 80G maxtors on special for £39 inc, 256M PC2700 for £23inc and have the m/b's for the same prices too
Aria are a bargain on some of the stuff u can pick up Those duron 1800s arnt to bad and if u only want to serve some small files, host some ****e, ICS then thatd be fine The ECS mobos are ok but like said above, nothing hurts with spending a lil extra and getting a great mobo. Proph.
switch out the HDD for an 8mb one im guessing the mobo is a kt400? edit: no usb2, its a KM266 chipset. personally id go for a kt400 or kt600, or even an Nforce2 if you can find one cheap one (probably WAY out of your budget tho lol) did you go for a mATX board on purpose? or was it just becuase it was cheap?
WOW that is some cheap kit cheers for the heads up on that, the duron 1600 will be fine i think for what i need, all iam going to be doing is having hte server store and serve my files (E.G MP3, Word Documents, and EXE Downloads) This will also be the home of all the user profiles and things, it wont be under alot of stress i dont think. Richman
if you can find a 256k cache chip, I think that'd be better suited. I run a Tbird 1000 with 1gb memory in my file server.
