Seem to be having a bit of an issue with a new install. Please bear in mind, this is the first PC I've set-up in like a year... So go easy on me ;)

I took my old PC, formatted it and stuck XP Pro with SP2 on it. Specs that matter are:

Abit KT7E with latest 4in1 drivers
Leadtek GF4 Ti4400 with latest nVidia drivers

I can't think of what else would be causing the problem, but everytime I try and use anything 3D it just completely freezes the computer.

It's using Direct X 9 and the Direct 3D test freezes too.

Any suggestions? Sorry this is so noob-like, but I'm at the end of my tether with this thing.

Tried reseating the card? Your PSU still working ok? Unplugg everything that isn't needed? (Opitcal drives, cathodes etc leave just the os drive, gpu, mem, cpu, mobo) and see what happens?

I'll give those a go later, cheers. It was working fine before I formatted it all. I think those nVidia drivers would have been a year old and it wasn't running Direct X 9 I don't think. Service Pack 1 too, of course.

Well, I did what you suggested Hiren but I didn't seem to have much luck.

Straight after I reseated the card I ran the Direct 3D test and ran all three perfectly. 'Great!' I thought. Tried them again, and it just froze, like before. Same in a game and even on Windows' own screensavers like 3D Pipes.

I'm pretty sure that it's not a heat issue or anything like that, card worked perfectly before. If anyone has any links for older versions of nVidia drivers and previous versions of Direct X I'd love to give them a go. Also, I haven't a clue how to uninstall Direct X properly. Hah.

Also, I think I have a GF FX something-or-other I could try later too...

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Have you tried installing a driver for your monitor ?? I know it sounds really lame but I had a similar problem and doing that fixed all my problems.

Ooh, I haven't no... I'll give it a go. Cheers.

Is it only 3D that's causing the problem? Windows etc is fine?

Have a look on guru3d I'm sure there is a guide to how to uninstall Direct X and there should be older versions on DirectX on there iirc.

try some older drivers for the gfx card. The new drivers aren't to friendly with the old Ti's :)

so you're useing the latest drivers from nvidia.com right? they are version 71.89 and they are not the best for your Ti. you better use something like 44.03 as the 71.89 are optimized for the latest video cards...different from your's(6800, 6600...).
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html
check in the archive for 4.* versions drivers which are more suitable for the GF 4 Ti. :)
    I hope I've helped.

They were the first I tried but then I tried a plethora of others, including the ones from it's release era and those included on the Leadtek disc and still couldn't get it going. Since this issue also occurred with Microsoft's generic drivers and also when I disabled hardware support on 3D screensavers and such I could only put it down to Direct X 9.0c and could not find a decent method of removal that supported XP with SP2.

In the end I installed an old first copy of XP Pro with Direct X 8.1 and used the drivers from the original disc and it works perfectly. Go figure. Considering it's just for my little sister to play The Sims and stuff I wasn't really prepared to find a new nVidia driver that actually worked.

    To summarise: Grrr.

    lol, thats quite odd.

Got a pc with a ti4200 running here with SP1, DX9c and the latest nvidia drivers (too lazy to hunt out old ones...) and it runs 100% fine :worried:
