I can't wait until natural selection moves into artificial selection and we can punish that kid.

Stuey brought up very valid points that some people can take it too far and, unfortunately, Legomans response seemed to be a knee jerk one in defence of a pasttime he prefers to many others.

As I see it gaming has benefits that a large percentage of the older population do not really consider, just seeing it as a childish pasttime and tend to be influenced by poorly researched articles like the one I posted, rather than looking into it themselves. As a parent and a gamer I can see the benefits to be gained playing, but I also know that I need to control the time my kids do it and to encourage them to do other things as well. it's all about maintaining a healthy balance. As an example, I take my son to football every Saturday morning for 1.5 hrs or so and when we come home I'll let him play on the 360 for an hour or so before lunch(he got Lego Star Wars: TCS for chrimbo), then in the afternoon we will do other stuff. It's not exactly rocket science. :D

Lol, I do understand though, PC/console games and gamers seem to be the current whipping boys for the "popular" press and those individuals trying to score points by peddling drivel to the ill informed majority.

Not sure if I agree with you on this particular statement.

I am not a gamer, but do enjoy playing games and have been for many, many years.
Yet the title "video games are crack for kids" did anger me.
I only play around 5~6 hours a week on average, sometimes I have a lazy weekend and play a bit more.

People always blame other people or things around them for their own failures.

It’s not the video games or the movies/music or even the food you eat that is bad for you – it’s the people abusing it that needs controlling or help.

Parents are just too busy trying to live their own lifes, never mind trying to keep children in control.

The world is changing and we can not compare today’s world to how things were 20years ago.

I think that the question we need to ask ourselves is why these kids are acting like this!
Most kids I know have a PC + Xbox + and some kind of Sony product (PSP/PS) or a Wee.
Why do parents to this – to keep the kids away! To keep the kids shut.

Well, my answer is simple, stop buying games and consoles for your kids, if they can not control themselves.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not having a go at anyone.

Everything in moderation is the answer – except for hurting and killing others, that is just a no, no :nono:

Yes, but if you did that then they might go outside where they could get attacked by a random child molester or do drugs or *gasp* have sex! They're so much safer being in the living room where we can keep an eye on them without actually having to interact. Everyone's happy and so what if they spend every waking hour in front of the TV / computer. As long as they do well on the standardized tests at school, what's the problem?

    :D

    Buy them educational products then.

One should not imprison kids with technology or fear of life – I’m sure technology is about freedom.
It’s like saying, don’t drive a vehicle because it can kill you, so rather stay home, buy everything & work from home.

Maybe I’m just typing crap or maybe I’m just bored, perhaps I just feel like being difficult.

Oh well, its Friday, so let me get ready for my weekend – watching movies, playing games (my weekend Crack) and lock my doors.

i think people are missing an important word here:
    balance.

there's a point in between 'play videogames all day and night and turn into a violent zombie' and 'don't buy any videogames at all, ever, or any kind of multimedia content for that matter - on second thoughts stay away from radio - it rots the brain'.

i think i found that point, it's a happy place. and when i have kids, i'll be damned sure to try my damnedest to get them to find it too. (<-- see that, stupid people? THAT'S CALLED TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR MY ACTIONS. TRY IT SOMETIME.)

That video was excellent RTT  Cheesecake

I wanna have a go at whatever game he was playin :eeek: Alot cheaper than crack with at least the same effects :D

For the record, there are some good educational tv shows, dvd's, pc games, board games, and social interaction in the real world is imporant.
Everything in moderation people.... wait a minute, moderation? Maybe every household needs a mod? Misbehave and you get banned and thrown in the garden shed/cool room overnight

Fantastic, exactly the same here. I played video games, read, played with Science kits, played football, swam, played badminton/tennis/golf and more when I was a kid...and my parents supported and encouraged me in every single one. OK, so they didn't understand gaming...but they did buy me consoles and games, when they could afford it. What they did also do was stop me playing when I was gaming for too long and either took me outside themselves or encouraged me to do something else.

Parents need to take responsibility for their own children and actually look after them, not shirk responsibility and blame games

Don't make this into a gaming is bad/parents need to do more etc thread.

If someone is gaming from the time they get in to the time they go bed, everyday, then yes that's pretty bad for a kid. But a kid who games say 3 hours a day, that's pretty normal in today's world.
