    There is nothing stopping them adding macrovision to the TV stream ala DVD's which is what stops people recording them to tape, that would also block people with HTPC's that just record from the analog interface.

    DRM as a concept is a good idea. However I have never seen an implementation that is transparent to the user, we should all be allowed to buy a copy and then transfer it to whatever format we chose, and seeing as thats not the studios aim its not likely to happen either.

    If I built a HTPC how could I make it change the channels on my satilite receiver when I wanted it to record a showing?

    Better pick up your TV-tuners soon before they all have this DRM junk enabled as well...

    But, surely if they start broadcasting with DRM, they will eventually do so in a way that breaks non DRM recievers to make sure everybody is using the content as they wish, not how you wish.

    Hehe...they can TRY...;) Anything like that, though, will be controlled at your box. They can't NOT send the content to you, they just don't have to give you access to it. Therein lies the beauty...a computer can be programmed, so your tuner cards can and will end up with hacks to get around it. :)

    After reading this, I'm itching to get our HTPC articles out to you all. We'll be going over systems, and I'm going to now keep a close eye on which companies have an eye towards DRM support in future versions. I think MythTV might be a good one to save us from all of this.

    MythTV won't use DRM till hell freezes over, although I could see it becoming illegal at some point after some lobbying from the bignames. Wouldn't be the first time they did something like that.

    I think more and more people are intrested in HTPCs, so some articles on them might be cool, if you could tell us stuff that isn't what everyone already knows that is :)

    In addition, many satellite receivers (not all) have a serial control port, sometimes labled as "low-speed data" which you can use to hook up to a dvr or htpc. The serial port is far better as it's not as unreliable and quicker.
