Hi Everyone, I recently pulled the plug on my old system : E6700 4GB Ram 500GB HDD 9800gtx 700W mod PSU ThermalTake Dokker case and built from scratch a lovely i7 rig all housed in a Fractal R3 case. I'm really happy with it but having got into FSX and ARMA 2 there are times when my 480 GTX starts to chug. I was thinking about selling my old rig and my 480 gtx to fund a new card. So far so easy! However, a mate has just given me an old (but brand new) Asus P7P55 LX P55 SOCKET 1156 mobo and a brand new 768 GB gainward 460 GTX card. This leaves me with a couple of choices and I'd really could do with some advice on them. Do I: a) Just sell my old rig complete on Ebay along with the the Asus P7 mobo and the 460 GTX. or b) Strip the decent parts out of my old rig (the PSU, case, HDD) and buy a i3/i5 CPU, some new RAM, a CPU cooler, etc and build a system with the Asus P7 mobo and the GTX 460. If i do this I reckon it will cost at least £100 so I'd have to spend money to make money. I could then flog the old bits too. As always your thoughts and advice would be greatly received.
As far as im aware, GTX 480 is 3rd best performing card available at the moment!!! its on par with a 570, so you would need to drop a load of cash on a 580! If your running a 1366 i7 rig and a GTX 480 you should be chewing up everything in sight. Agreed, Arma II can be a pain to run, but my GTX460 and I5 can run it pretty sweetly on high settings
i'd agree with that... Well, it's also on a par with the 6970, so there's also an AMD that's roughly in 3rd place there...
I would wait for new graphics cards to come out before upgrading. Maybe sell the old stuff now so you can have the $$$ waiting to see what you can get later. Always use the 460 for physx until you find a buyer.
FSX performance isn't about graphics cards; it's primarily about CPU power. Is your i7 system X58 based, and is it overclocked? I have FSX on my system and it runs like a dream, complete with plugins like REX 2 and various mesh packs. Upgrading from a GTX 480 is pointless IMHO - the cost of the upgrade vs the increase in performance just wouldn't be worth it, not even close.
Ok everyone. Thanks for your answers. I might have to have a look at my game settings and see whats going on. So...I keep my current card for now. Any ideas what I do with the rest of the stuff? Build an i3, build an i5, sell my old e6700, break it all up and sell it in bits, etc, etc?
