I wasn’t that impressed either the last time I was there. Although I was there solely to get drunk and get drunk I did, so I don’t really remember much other than the train and my hotel. Wait… You said leeks, not Leeds… Never mind… But… my point still stands…
Browsing the site on my work laptop was absolutely not the time to discover that not only does printables.com host pornographic material, but my profile displays content tagged with “NSFW” by default. All I was doing was idly browsing through the “trending” section on a bored Friday afternoon… I absolutely did not expect to see a pornographic anime portrait to scroll into view…
They still make Daz. I can't recall the last time I saw it in the flesh, I wonder if they still do the same "washed up itv soap actor knocks on random door" adverts?
TIL - Peter Capaldi auditioned for the role of Benjamin Sisko on DS9. We could've had a sweary Scottish starbase commander!
Nah, Avery Brooks did the Space Dad/Space Jesus role brilliantly well. More than just his performance, the character was a role model. The (arguably racist) “absent/neglectful black father” trope was already incredibly worn out by the time DS9 came along. Some shows of the era like Fresh Prince did challenge that in some ways, but none with such depth and feeling as DS9 did. Here’s a single black father, not just “a Federation officer who happens to be a black man”, but unashamedly and unapologetically black. He absolutely wears his culture and heritage on his sleeve; he wears traditional outfits when not in uniform, he cooks creole food from scratch for his son, friends, and officers. And not only is he in a command position with respect & authority, he’s absolutely devoted to his son. It’s not a perspective I’d considered before (being a pasty white dude from Wales), not until I watched a clip of Brooks talking about it at a convention. Good article about it here: https://www.vulture.com/2018/01/deep-space-nine-revolutionary-depiction-of-black-fatherhood.html TNG remains my favourite Star Trek series, because it’s the one I grew up with. But DS9 is absolutely the best Star Trek series, and Brooks’ portrayal of Sisko is a key part of it.
Oh I'm not saying he would have been better, just it would have been good. He's got a vague resemblance to René Auberjonois so could have been some fun with people mistaking him for odo, "getting better at faces odo, but he doesn't look that tired. lol" kind of thing. DS9 was my favourite, sisko was a badass who kicks in doors and takes names, the rest of the cast/crew more varied and colourful, but on rewatching it now the deep religious element grates on me heavily. When I was younger a lot of family life revolved around church so it was familiar, but in adulthood and my separation from religion and growing disdain for it, it leaves a foul taste.
Apparently, in the US, Subarus are popular with lesbians... https://www.autocar.co.uk/opinion/new-cars/real-legacy-woodstock-how-subaru-cracked-liberal-america

TIL When building a new PC with both a fully modular PSU and a CPU AIO cooler that requires SATA power, it's kind of important to make sure the SATA power cable is plugged into the PSU!
Thankfully we’re past the days when CPUs would just fry themselves when cooled inadequately Bad memories of Thunderbird Athlon and Pentium 3 chips, where the core was exposed with no IHS and a badly-fitted cooler meant either destroying the core or the chip cooking itself…
As a SW fan, I might have to visit Cleveleys seafront soon https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c20wrrwkwqvo
Watermelons = antisemitism https://www.theguardian.com/society...tic-video-of-watermelon-launches-legal-action
That’s both more complex and just as simple as it first appears . Some relevant quotes - emphasis mine: So… watermelons are antisemitic because Israel & Israel advocates/supporters say it’s antisemitic. In much the same way that criticism of Israel’s very existence is deemed antisemitic because Israel says it’s antisemitic. (Well… technically, the UK says that too - pretty sure that’s part of some international agreement on holocaust denial or something like that.)
I don't want to wade into this one and could say more, but I won't It is however, extremely frustrating that expressing opposition to Israeli government policy is automatically anti semitic to some people. Equally, expressing concern for the people of Gaza and Palestinians is seen as being pro Hamas and therefore also automatically anti semitic. I read a quote recently, and I cannot remember whom it was attributed to but it was essentially "I judge someone's intelligence by how many concurrent conflicting beliefs they can hold in their head" There are so many contradictions and potential sources of hypocrisy out there, never mind equating things with one another that are totally mismatched. Bad stuff has been done on both sides which is indisputable. Watermelons being pro Palestinian? Yep, that's a new one to me And on a more important note, YIL that Pastel de Nata liqueur is a thing - 3 cheers for alcoholic custard!
Yeah, I have a lot of thoughts, but there’s already a thread for that in Serious that I’m already steering clear of. I did try to look into this a bit more, and did find an incident in which police in Australia had arrested someone for having a watermelon sticker on their car and the justification was antisemitism. But I couldn’t find anything definitive on why watermelons are considered antisemitic, all I could find was that it’s commonly used to represent the Palestinian flag. Hence:
