I know you have seen in various project logs, including my own where we stick pop rivets in to temporarily hold panels in position. There is an alternative: Cleco pins: These are like reusable rivets. The come in all the normal sizes we use. I have built street cars, drag race cars, Land Speed cars, and trucks and used them to hold firewall panels, body patch panels, and all kinds of panels. They are installed with a special pliers like this: They just squeeze to open, pop in the rivet hole, release and done. They will hold as tight as a clamp but really fit where the rivets need to go. I have some in my offsite storage tool boxes. Inexpensive, easy to use, and last forever. Just don't misplace the pliers. they'd only work on the edge of something though, as you need to be able to fit the pliers around both sides.
No, NO. The pliers grip way up on the Cleco and jst the rivet sized portion goes in the river holes. Like a push button ket chain release. Just the same method as a rivet gun. Lemme find some better examples. They really work just like rivets - from one side only. Found a tutorial pictures http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=7845 john
Yeah i have seen them before, a nascar being skined, it looked like Pinhead from hellraiser! Very useful I imagine for tweaking body panels, cut out and shape roughly then offer up fix in place and tweak it as you go so its a snug fit.
