Having never had the guts to put saw to metal as to speak I was wondering if someon could advise the basic equipment u need to do ur own mods! I dont mean anything specialist! Just the basics! Cheers J
My modding equipment consists of 1x B&D dremel clone (with speed adjust) 1x g clamp (SOO USEFUL) 1x soldering iron 1x hacksaw 1x coping saw (useful sumtimes) range of screwdrivers and stuff... oh yeh; 1x drill 1x MULTIMETER!!!! thats about it i think.
I personally dig Rotozip vs Dremel due to mass better cutting and sanding. I also use a coping saw for acute stuff and then a drill and different ranges of sandpaper and screwdrivers. Soldering Iron is also useful if youre into the circuitry stuff.
Haha, if I was to try and name you all the tools I have in my utility room, the pages would exceed Iraqs 11,000 page dossier. About 5 drills, 3 mini drills, couple of solderin irons, dozens of pliers and tweezers, dozens of vices and clamps, countless saws and jugsaws, 2 drill presses, about 50 screw drivers, 2 cordless drills, christ, i could go on forever. Tons of tools!
Okay all i started out with is a dremel and some cutting wheels... but like most people i also own and dril and hack saw.... Also i would start simple with small mods like a window.. that was my first mod ever.. then move bigger.. eventually with my moddest budget i got things like files, all sorts of drill bits, various type of abrasives, paint, solder and electrical stuff.. but i suggest you buy what you need.. and use what you buy
Short list of tools 2xdrills grinder + sander B&Q wizard with router and worm ataichment number of hand saws and files varias sandpaper screwdeivers etc there the basics me thinks i also have available to me CNC breakpress CNC puch (shape) Welding equipment Lots of piller drills presses + power rollers etc (Metal company"family business") \Edit\Basicly all your need is a Modders friend, the DREMEL(clones), file (neataning metal edges), screwdriver(to tighten things and take lids of tins), Drill(to drill holes and stuff) and thats it O and some sandpaper./Edit/
M_D_K's list is a good one. What I have, recommend the basics, everything else is gravy... Basics Drill Dremel (rotary tool) Files (you can get a decent set for virtually nothing) Screwdrivers Sandpaper (not really a tool but you should always have some.. a sanding block is a tool that I recommend picking up though) The rest. Drill Press Jigsaw Table Saw Router (and router table) Miter Saw Heat Gun Belt Sander Orbiting Hand Sander Hand Nibbler Soldering Iron Glass Grinder Table Circular Saw Generic carpentry tools
Right on!... I have six sets of goggles last I counted... respirtory and ear protection are good too depending on what you're doing. http://www.bit-tech.net/article/101/
a few things i consider essential that havent been listed yet: 1: holesaws, 76mm and 92mm, 120mm if yer into big fans 2: nibbler 3: nice set of x-acto knives with fresh blades 4: third hand, i cant solder without it , get one with a magnifying glass built on if you are visually impaired like me 5: babysitter
I dont think i own any safetly at all! If im ina diy shop, and i have a choice between getting a long awaited tool, or a pair of goggles, then im afraid im gunna risk loosing an eye
Q-Where do you get a 120mm holesaw? all i've managaed to find is a 76, couldn't even find a 92mm i've looked in most places i can use a this little scratching tool rotats and cuts a out a circle that will go upto 120mm but its only good for metal i want a couple of hole saws for perspex and orcward places like the front of a case. O and where you get the third hand with magnifyer i had one but have since lost it after putting down in garage (magnifyer would be well usefull as im visualy impared too). Thanks all P.S. sorry if im hijacking the thread
I just recently/finally found a 121mm hole saw (4.75"), they are rare. Where I found mine probably won't help much since I'm in the States but I got mine at Lowes, a big DIY chain. Cost me a pretty penny too. It's a high quality one but it was $38 for the hole saw and the mandrel/pilot bit was another $10 But since I don't see them often, I had to snatch it up while I had one there in front of me.
I've seen them i just don't want to pay the price i thought maybe some one had found one that doesn't envolve me selling my left kidney to buy the thing. I found one on www.screwfix.co.uk i think thats it anyway and it was £40 or somin that too me is steap the arba isn't aproblem got loads of them. Thanks for your help though
Tools? We don't need no stinkin' tools!... err... actually yes, we do. I have a dremel with the usual trimmings, and a stand if possible. I would also recommend a variable speed drill with hole saw disks for bigger mods. Get a 12W soldering iron, nothing bigger. Antex do a great one with melt-proof silicone power cable (in case you rest the iron on it by accident). Get a Multimeter with temperature probe, for obvious reasons. Get a set of screwdrivers, pliers etc. or better yet: a Leatherman Wave multitool for all your modding needs... Paper masking tape. Got to have paper masking tape. Sanding/polishing materials.
I agree. talking of tape, another must is black insulation tape! "Oh crap i forgot to put the heat shrink on..." Insulation tape is yur man
Me myself i kinda rely on Black Power duck tape, i find it much better and stronger. its holding my old window in palce and most things in my room
