The worse experience with techsupport was when I working on my aunts computer. I needed some info for the setting of the router. As a good tech-noob I read the manual four times, but I could find it so I called techsupport me: hello could you tell me what blablabla should be, because I can't contect to the internet. techsupport: You can find that on our website. me: If I could get to the website wouldn't have a problem And another funny thing: My aunt (the as above) had bought a digital camera, and she didn't know where to plug it in the computer. So I said, usually the USB port are on the front or the back where you can plug the cable in. That the only port the cable fits in so it can't the a problem. Later she said that she plugged it in and it didn't work. So I go over there to see what was the problem. To my shock I found out she litteraly rammed the usb cable in a etherport
same, i do tht all the type on my pc, the ethernet ports right next to the usb, and usb plugs fit in there quite easily.
Yeah, sometimes I put it in the wrong hole too. One thing that I liked was when I called DLink to figure out the hard reset on my router I started talking to the guy and he had some good one like that.
I've put usb into the ethernet port before on a laptop, it doesn't need ramming it just slips in but doesn't work well.....
But yeah, I've put the USB cables in my Ethernet ports. Luckily, my family is pretty computer savvy (and when they're wrong, they aren't assholes), so I'm not usually busy. I help my neighbor a lot, but he always has real problems (the computer won't boot, and it takes me a good honest hour to fix it, or he needs to replace his motherboard) so I'm not that piqued. Plus, I demand payment from all my customers, so I've gotten copies of OSX 10.2, .3, and .4 for free as well as a 4x6 Graphire3 tablet, and several hundred bucks. Not bad...
People say this to me surprisngly often Person: 'so..how many megabytes does this computer have?' Me: 'ermm, megabytes of what?' Person: something always along the lines of 'dont you try and get smart with me'
Indeed - the distinction between RAM and hard drive space seems a step too far for many people that I know. Branding them both as "memory" isn't really going to help me much...
What gets on my nerves is when you explain something technical to someone and they nod and agree that there understanding it. Then when you’re finished explaining they ask the same question or slightly rephrased. ARG!
One thing that annoys me, is working in an IT department, are users saying "I can't put x picture/screensaver/program/porn dialler on my PC because I don't have administrator privalages, or x is disabled" My reply usually is "You can't, its company policy" They respond, "Oh, but its my PC" 1) Do you think I trust pea-brains installing things on my networked system? 2) Its not your fecking PC, its provided for you to do a job, its a tool, like a spanner, or a pair of pliers. You dont go round etching your name on other company property do you? The other thing that gets my goat is the fact that most of the pictures they want as their desktop images are 400px x 200px images of their cat/dog/fish/pet banana that they stretch to whatever screen res they have. I worked with a guy a few years ago who claimed that he had a PC that NASA uses and his drivers cost over £1000 needless to say, I was seriously impressed
this is one good thread, brought back alot of memories from when i worked in the Public sector of IT (and IT support in general) i spent 3 years trying to get into IT support and the las 6 years getting out. i had/still have had enought with people and computers. where i work im Dubbed as the IT guy (i keep telling them i know F*** all) but i get roped into fixing PC at office level. i think having on my CV, It support for 3 companies i worked for and IT manager for another i cant say i know F*** All, shame really The company i work for has just been taken over and in part of the take over we got a new server and 20 PC's (out of 30) i was told by our new head office that i dont have the required knowledge to do anythnig more complicated than to change the back up tapes every morning (exact words) so i thought ok i wont do anythnig at all and i directed all out little problems, Collegue: can't log in Me: did you cange your password and forget it? Collegue: errrrr yep! stuff like that Head office is now getting pissy with all the problems we are creating but the new network runs slow, slower than before, i left it as and let everyone else to complain to head office (as i dont require much stuff of the network as i create new stuff on my PC (CAD Tech)) they came down From Leeds and couldnt find anything wrong all their tests worked fine. so they left, i was where the server is (under my boss's spare desk) and i dropped a pen and saw that the origional IT techy (60 year old bloke who knew a bit about comps) and run the network cable from the 100 user switch in to a 4 port 10/100mb Hub (yep a HUB) and then out of that into the server!!!! but he hid the hub quite well under neeth the server so i looked like the cable was just tidied up under it. i phone tech support about this took some photos and they went mentel. he diened it at first but then owned up saying that he couldnt find a cable long enough and thought it would be ok. the server runs fine now. and he has left the company a mate asked me why his PS2 game he just bought wont work on his £1000 Dell PC as it shouldnt have any problem running any game (as the Dell guy on the phone told him) i told him to phone dell and ask them, but some one else told my mate before he could phone them. my mum whinging that it takes 30-40s to boot her machine and that "all this new fangled tecnology should be instant" i have loads, but dont have time to type all now
PS2 game on a PC! AH-HAHAHAHA, made my day. Actually, atm, the great thing about working in a "physics" lab is that most people can sort themselves out and the IT dept is half decent, although, it PAINS me to use computers where I dont have admin rights. Lets be honest here, you just signed up as "your gf" didnt you? In the way that, "she" doesnt have a name or anything. If you had signed up as "Laura" or whatever then it might have been slightly more convincing, but even then, it's still a first post.
I think its more likely that Hybr1d signed up and posted it tbh (unless Hybr1d is, in fact, speedfreek's girl) The rules quite clearly state that youre not allowed more than one account, and that both will be banned when spotted. decisions decisions...
