I hate EA, I wish they would either a) make good games or b) die in a fire.

Despite your review of the Sims 3, I still think it's a steaming pile of shite and is akin to WoW in being uninspired and designed to be a timesink / grindfest where there are so many hooks built into the game (I just need to level up gardening one more level, then get my sims mood good, then he should get a promotion!) that it becomes less of a game and more of some kind of ongoing neverending thing. They probably drew inspiration from the people who design slot machines, designed to be 'fun' in the sense you just can't give it up and need to keep paying / buying expansion packs. At least in WoW you can make friends and join a guild and end up dossing about with people, rather than just on your own.

FWIW, I bought the Penumbra pack this week and it's absolutely amazing, +rep to the devs for doing such a good job and I heartily recommend you all get it as soon as you can (It was on for £4.50 for the whole pack, not sure if it still is). There is a fine example of a game that is compelling to play, not because the gameplay requires you to do stat up a TINY bit more to get to the next level / unlock / whatever, but because it is genuinely exciting. It's like being in your favourite 5* film every time you play.

I do love Penumbra and the team behind the series is very cool and hardworking. Also, I've fixed that error.

 

I've bought Penumbra: Anthology last week too. I know summer is not the right time to play horror games - but it's available for a great price, I couldn't resist. Guess I'll have to wait till november to enjoy the game. But I'm happy to support them. And they don't plague their games with annoying DRM...

 

How can you say this!? Sims 3 looks like so much fun. Sims 1 was awesome when it first came out and Sims 2 was quite good.

It depends really how the person has fun. For my money, I don't find it fun, I find it akin to a slot machine in that you need to put in that little bit extra to level up. Even if you don't concentrate on that, you will find yourself 'grinding' in order to get enough money to buy new stuff, but you can't even do that properly because they will whinge about their needs. Speaking of which, who takes 3 hours to go toilet, have a shower and have breakfast? Because if you have work at 9 you better be getting up at 5.30 or so in order to make it on time.

So I like two kinds of games:
- games that give the player genuine freedom, without time-limits on things such as hunger or toilet or sleep that can constrain the player's ability to do things
- games that give the player a cinematic experience, afterall games are entertainment and it doesn't matter if they are linear if the story is developed properly - good example are Call of Duty 4 and 5 where I did feel a connection to the player character at times.

The sims, for me, evokes no emotional response other than frustration and the need to get more stuff. And if I wanted to be frustrated like that, well, there's real life

edit: actually, I like more than those two, but broadly speaking it gives the spectrum of what I want from a game. A game can be simple but still fantastic fun - a good example being Grid Defense [sic].

 

I predict Sims3 will be top for the next 3/4 years. Looking at the top ten, you would be forvigen in thinking no games have been released in months. The same names again.

 

Sims will never be fun because you get to do exactly the same as you do in real life.. And basically i want to escape that when gaming.
