As the title says... Im looking to build a compact rig but after talking to a lot of people I still can't decide what GPU to get, Ive been told by people on here the GTX460 1GB is really god but then a few of my other mates have said that ATI do a few good cards in my budget and that nVidia had an issue with updating their 1gb cards or something? Anyway jsut wondering what the top 5 recommended ATI cards could be so I thought I would post on here and see what you guys said.
Just keep in mind that the 460 is a powerfull card and on par with the likes of the 6850 and nearer the 5850 than you would think.
Agreed, I'd go with this: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-...der-clock-1560mhz-336-cores-2x-dl-dvi-i-mhdmi Right on budget, amazing performance and a very quiet and powerful cooler.
So is nVidia better or is ATI better? Bearing in mind it has to last, Im not going to be upgrading it every 6 months so its gotta last for about 2-3 years hopefully...
I wouldn't go fora 5850/70. DX 11 support is sketchy. At £150 it's a choice between a 6850 and 460 1gb there basically equal on price and performance
Ok so without going for the cheapest one, which manufacturer should I go with for each? Someone on here suggested the MSI GTX460 OCedition at £120 but there were others at a bit of a higher price... would I be paying for brand more than performance?
There is no better. Its just a matter of nvidias 3d vision and cuda and physx VS ATIs eyefinity and bad drivers
Your paying for warranty, aftermarket coolers, factory overclocking... Id recommend the msi cyclone or twin frozr OR the gigabyte one.
If you could stretch to £180 the 1GB MSI GTX 560 Ti Twin Frozr is on Today Only at Scan for just under that. That's the best bang/buck card at the mo, that and the AMD 1Gb 6950 although they tend to be a tad more expensive. Edit: Hang on. Sapphire 6870 for £151+postage if you don't mind buying from Pixmania clicky
I wish I could afford £180 but honestly the budget Ive got is already stretched so its a case of see what I can get with what I have...
Not sure on price but evga have a10 year warranty and a trade up program IF you register within so many days. It would be my choice I'd you want longevity
xfx is usually 2 years, gigabyte and asus are usually 3. overclockers.co.uk have offers on from time to time tho I've had problems ordering from them before. Ebuyer and scan are better bets.
If this is the card going into your tiny lanbox, make sure you take power consumption into consideration. The 5870 is a wonderful value right now (ignoring driver issues) but it's quite large and power hungry.
Sapphire 5850 is on pre-order for £107.99 over at OcUK: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-259-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1711 Nothing beats it at that price range. But not sure if the Sapphire model can be voltage tweaked for higher overclock or not, but if comparing at stock, it is around 10% faster than a GTX460 1GB.
Cool, nice spot! I'll give it a look and see what I think. I have everything else ordered/ready to order now so its just the GFX. Dan
