Im looking for a top loaded dvd rom for my HTPC im building. Top load as in a lid opens up and you snap the cd in ( like reqular portable cd players ). Anyone ever seen them? I know they have to make them because I once saw a cd drive for a laptop like this. Pleas post links if you know of any!

You could use a laptop drive I guess that allow you to snap the CD in. although admitidly still on a tray. some external CD-ROM/CD-RW drives have a flip up lid mainly the lite-on drives that I have seen. you could get a USB one and mod it. Maybe replace the lid or something (but that would void the warranty) Let us know how you get on :)

Not sure if you've read the Iris thread, but we've been talking a but about CD drives, and in paricular a Laptop drive, you can easily get adapters for normal IDE calbes, and you could easily hack off the lid of the drive, or jam open the tray.

I think I found exactly what you need, below is pictured Sony's new portable CD-R/RW/DVD/MP3 Player that can burn and read CD-R/RW's at a rate of 24x/10x/24x and read DVD's at a speed of 8x it has a 8mb buffer and a usb interface and for more fun it can also read memory sticks. It only carries a price tag of $279.99 . . .

Yeah I saw the sony one in the paper the other day. I just dont want to spend 300 on something that im going to "mod", ie tear apart :naughty: . What I want to do is sort of make this computer in the shape of a game cube with a lid that flips up on the top to reveal the dvd rom. Ive thought of using regular dvd-roms and just mod take the top off but I ran into the problem of what to do with the autorun tray switches. <---The switch that stops the tray from moving out and the one that stops it when its all the way inside the drive. I was thinking maybe I could make the lid flip these switches. I abandoned this way because I thought it would be easier to shape an already made top load dvd for my needs rather than make one. Anyone have any better ideas or suggestions?

By the way I just read the iris thread and the idea of the iris opening to reveal the dvd sound really sweet! Just again, what do you do with the tray/autorun switches?
