you cant stop and enjoy a type of technology before its out of date now-a-days and you can bet your bottom dollar what ever one i choose to go for and spend loads of money on making sure my TV etc its man enought to use it and that ive upgraded my DVD collection will be the one that will not last.

in the last 10 years there has been so many different formats of audio and video its getting stupid. ive always bought the latest technology after reading loads of reviews and the reviewers saying that this is the future of audio/video. ive got stung. i bought a CD player 15 years ago (still going good and still used) then came DAT so i bought that as it was the future - that lasted about a year before minidisc came in guess what....... i bought one of best minidisc recorders as it was better than living with you band of choice that lasted about 2 years before they stopped producing pre-recorded minidiscs and it all went back to CD's.............. and now MP3 players with the hind if DVD audio some where as well. yep i have bought a MP3 player but how long before that is out of date and un supported.

its the same with video, video was around for like 30 years and needed a sucessor horay for DVD, but how do you record?? ahhh DVD recorders........ but what format do you go for + /- /Ram arrrgghhhh and now bloody blu-ray (whats happed the the e at the end of blu?????) or HD-DVD so will all my current DVD collection (upgraded from Video - bought not recorded) work on the new format or do i have to spend £1000's on that as well only to be told the technology i have is out of date and wont be supported anymore??

i just bought season one of the simpsons, on the DVD case there is a bit of writing telling you about the season youve just bought. there is a great quote

you will be able to buy the complete works of the simpsons on DVD just before they bring out the next format and you have to buy it again.

    how true

Good chance Blu-Ray and HD DVD both won't catch on. Just my thoughts.

I agree, it will be a while before they become mainsteam.

There currently isn't enough HD material around so justify the extortionate cost of the first batch of players. It will take a while for the scene to settle down a bit before we will eventually see who the winner is - Bluray or HDDVD.

Unlike the DVD+/-R(W) war I cant see there being much chance of single tray/slot dual players as not only is the copy protection very different, but also the different wavelengths of laser are going to make it very challanging technically.

Sony have already lost one round of format wars with Betamax, will they learn from their mistakes this time around? I guess we will have to wait and see :)

I hope Bluray wins purely because technology using higher frequency laser should have been invented ages ago and it offers the larger capacity!

I'm hedging my bets on blu-ray, mainly because of the PS3 support for it. That is a guaranteed market right there, so the consumer will be familiar with blu-ray ("oh, look, a movie that I can watch in HD on my PS3") as well as the makers of blu-ray having a safety cushion thanks to sony.

To be fair to Sony, them and Philips inventing dear old CDs and holding the patent for so long is part of the reason we have these format wars all the time. No-one want to be stuck paying them for using the industry standard again.

As said before these will take a while to catch on as whilst HD does indeed look lovely you can only get LCD HD TVs (to my knowledge). On ordinary TV LCDs still look worse than CRT and HD ones tend not to do as well as ordinary LCDs on standard broadcasts. Maybe we should get the LCD right before we home on to HD?

I'm curious if that Toshiba-majig can play future HD discs with capacity's over 30GB...

This little Blu-ray/HD thing will of course catch on... as it is the last stage in the era of physicall distribution. Before everything goes digital. Then the MACHINES RISE!!!

I'm sure we'll see a HD/DVD/CD/VCD player out there sometime late next year.

I'm holding off buying any new TV recorder until there's some good value models with twin-tuner Freeview built-in. STB != ƒtw :sigh:

Now here is an interesting twist to confuse Joe Public with: LG's pretend HD DVD player

This player is NOT "HD DVD". It is a normal DVD player that claims to upscale to HDTV resolutions. Scaling existing movies from 480p to 720p is clearly not going to be as good as reading native 720p from the disc.

The biggest clue is in the price (other than no players have been released yet): I imagine that proper HD DVD players will be more like £500 when they are released, not £99.

Ironically, I believe LG are in the Blu-ray camp anyway :hip:
