Hey guys. New to the forum here and I'm pretty nervous and need some help.

I was helping my friend reformat his computer, which required backing up all his precious pictures, music and word documents. I foolishly chose to back up his data on my Toshiba Gigabeat S30, thinking it was a reliable choice. In the process of connecting the gigabeat back up to his computer and then disconnecting it, the gigabeat gave me an error called "error 4" and then proceeded to "wipe" my data (i put that in quotations because there is no way it could have completely erased 20 gigs of data in 30 seconds). Now im completely scared because my little favor I was doing for my friend is turning into something bad.

I've called the toshiba customer service and they basically told me that there is nothing they can really do to recover my lost data. However, the guy I talked to said that he doubts the data is actually gone and that it is possible to recover it by some extreme method or another.

I also tried using recovery software like PhotoRec, but because the gigabeat doesnt have an assigned drive letter, I cant use the recovery tool.

Does anyone have any clue as to how i can go about getting these files from the gigabeat? The worst part is knowing that the files are still on the sucker, but not being able to access them.

Hey welcome to the forums, don't know much about the gigabeat but can you see the device in disk management (right click on my computer, then manage). Maybe you could assign a drive letter from there? If not can you plug it into your PC and see if your PC can recognise it?

Hope all goes well, sucks when you lose other peoples data, not that I've ever done it :worried:

Thanks for the welcoming. I tried to find the device under disk management, but it doesn't show up. My own PC is doing the exact same thing: It shows the gigabeat as an "Audio Device" under the "My Computer" screen. Not as a removable storage device or anything.

I just thought of something: The only reason the gigabeat shows up on my computer as an MTP device (Audio Device) is because I installed the drivers that came from toshiba. Maybe it is possible to install drivers for the toshiba that tell it to show up an external hard drive with an assignable drive letter!

I doubt anyone has done this, but I will start looking. If anyone knows whether this is even theoretically impossible, please give your input. Thanks again.

Welcome to BT! I don't have a Gigabeat, so I'm wondering if it's just a bog standard USB connection? If so, chances are you'll be able to connect it up to a PC without drivers, and it'll detect it as an external HDD.
