Looking to get myself a new set of speakers, either 2.0 or 2.1 and wondered as I have a toslink connection on my mobo whether this would be a better way to connect speakers. Also looking for suggestions in the £50 range.
depends what you are plugging into I guess. the toslink is a digital connection, so depends if the DAC on the other end is any good. It could potentially be worse than just plugging in analogue.
You'll probably find that not many or even no 2.0 or 2.1 speakers under £50 will have an Optical connection on them anyway as I found out when I was looking for speakers for Dizzy in his thread. I also seem to remember reading somewhere that if you have a discreet audio card, a digital connection coming from it would just pass straight through rather than going through all the fancier, upgraded chips and whatnot on the discreet card. This could be nonsense however
I quite like the 910's you mention in the linked thread. Can you explain further what you mean in the last bit of your above post? I don't have a sound card in my Parvum field. The reason I would prefer toslink as I have it on my tv with the sound bar and the sound is clearly superior than the other options to connect.
To be fair I swear by to tos link and have recently been in the same boat as you as I also wanted a set of speakers with optical in. In the end I purchased a second hand denon m39 amp that has optical in and coupled with my monitor audio bx1's that I nicked out my living room, I am now hearings games like never before.
If you don't have a discreet sound card Glenn then I'd ignore that last bit. I was basically saying that digital is digital so if you had a sound card, it would be wasted if you got a set of speakers with Optical/Coax as all the processing would be done by the speakers, rather than the card.
