Top Gear have already solved this. A combine harvester with a snow plough and a flame thrower

I have to say; I do like the idea of charging Rioters with Armoured Vehicles. Nothing sends you scattering like a Bulletproof Van hurtling towards you, an Officer with possibly murderous intent in his eyes at the wheel.

Although it would come into very bad press if he did "Accidentally" run over one of the Rioters.

Yes why don't we try and recreate Tienanmen Square.

I never suggested that. Although the fact they're already doing the very act of charging them with said Armoured Vehicles shows that it doesn't have be like Tienanmen Square.

That brings me onto another point: Why does everyone thing anything involving "Armoured Vehicles" or anything related to the army turns us into China, I mean; Seriously? The thought of possibly using a more powerful force than the overstretched police makes us like China?

Just to give you an idea of what these vehicles are designed to deal with and how effective they are at shifting people, no matter how pathetically stupid they are.

    Daily Mail, surely?

I'm not suggesting that we do this now, and not with the local airport vehicles. I'm just musing about preparing for the future, because this will be a recurring event.

What you mean that paper that suggests ethnic cleansing every time an individual from an ethnic minority says a naughty word?

    Highbrow reading right there.

I didn't have you as a Daily Mail reader, for some reason. Not sure why this needs to be a recurring event.

The looters are looting for basically no other reason than because they've figured out that they can get away with it. It's a boundary issue. They will continue to loot until they feel that they can't get away with it anymore. So how the government and police respond in the next 24 hours will be crucial.

But people are not going to forget this. They have now learned that if they organise themselves in sufficiently large numbers they can do what they want. It's a new trick, and we have to have a new response.

One would assume hope the police would be better prepared in the future. After all, it was the police's inability to cope with the initial riots in London and people seeing the rioters there do as they please, looting whatever they want without consequence that lead to copycats trying their luck in other cities. Once that 'riot mentality' set in around the country, it was really far too late to be thinking about setting up and organised response as things were already out of control.

I guess it was only a matter of time before it was posted.

I reckon it will be though.

I'd like to think the people I am acquainted with are of a better moral standing than to become involved in any of this, but in the event that one of them has been involved in any of this, I'll be shopping the *******s.

I saw two comments today from a squady and a policeman, and they sum up the situation brilliantly for me - excuse my paraphasing here:

...you bet that if a soldier kills somebody in a riot we'll never know which solider is was and he'll be dealt with 'internally' by the forces and they'll pull together and simply refuse to comment on the whole thing.

Sums up the situation pretty well for me...police need more freedom and more trust to do their jobs; meanwhile we definitely don't want to use the army in this sort of situation.

They need to bring in some of the LA riot specialists. And declare Martial Law enabling the use of SAS and SBS against the common population.
Rioting for better rights is bat-**** stupid. There need to be proper socialist programs that help weaker people in the community.

Oh, and +1 for the Top Gear riot vehicle. Would be absolutely awesome. As a thought experiment, what do you think Jeremy Clarkson would do if he was PM?
