Sorry for double but... yeah, bloody sunday anyone? This country is still cleaning up the mess from that, no weapons would be fired. It would merely be a deterrant, and it WOULD work.

I think that they should start mixing in sand with the water when they deploy the water cannons. That sand would make it quite a bit more painful when people get hit by it.

Sadly it'd also necessitate that the mechanisms of the cannons be cleared out once they were finished. Far too much work for the Government to consider. Plus a touch "inhumane." And heaven help us if we hurt the people destroying property, livelihoods, endangering lives and stealing.

What happens when you put sand in a tank of water.
    ANSWER
    It sinks to the bottom.

    Dumb idea.

    There plenty of irritants however...

I still say the UV dye used to catch Car Theives would be a good idea. That stuff takes a while to come off because it literally dyes the skin on the UV wavelength. You'd have to scrub a few layers of skin off to get rid of it.

I don't know about other places but in Leeds there were more police than I've ever seen before. It might have had something to do with the football - Leeds vs Bradford - but I counted more than 20 police vans waiting at City & Holbeck police station. Somehow I doubt any Leeds police were drafted to London today.

this looks pretty bad over here.. I mean everyone here has guns- so this would never happen

the riot like the one in la only happened because of a corrupt police chief who told them to stand down.. he let la burn go figure

the government needs to really get boots on the ground.. forget all the fancy gadgets- just boots everywhere should do it.. if they lose a couple here and there

I mean boots in some asses

Wonder if this has anything to do with real terrorists.

And if it isn't then they must be thinking WTF also.

Having fired a riot gun (what is meant by rubber bullets) I wouldn't say they are in any way an option yet, not that they don't deserve it but a direct impact by one is virtually guaranteed to break a bone - they are meant to be bounced of the ground into people to prevent serious injuries.

The likelihood of a mistake being made in the heat of the moment and someone getting blinded etc. by a fist sized lump of solid plastic is quite high as it would be something our police have never had to do in recent times, though water cannon with additives sound good.... wouldn't mind adding some of the very good dyes we have at work to the water (which also happen to be cytotoxic drugs....)

What I'd like to see is rather than the police lines just standing there while people throw stuff at them send groups out to snatch individuals at random, so people start to get worried and can no longer rely on being shielded by the mob.

Really need to get the batton rounds ( plastic bullets) and some water cannons on the go. When theres a riot over here the police take no prisoners.

Some people dont agree with this but even over here in the height of the troubles looting was never an issue.

You don't have to mix them in the tank, a lot of systems inject the sand into the stream once it has started hitting the nozzle and accelerating out.

Although I did forget about irritants, replace the water with bear mace and you can quell almost anything

the police the should of switched from soft to hide and watch , to water cannons or Direct control surround them and get them on the floor and tie rap them up hands and foots and get Trucks to take them off to an camp area's

there should of been no Sunday night or Monday or today, the police are an joke to the rest of the world as they are currently slowing them just standing doing **** all they should be rounding them up (block all exits and force them into one spot with gas water and rubber ammo guns with loud speakers indicating the warning that they got gassed or shot at will happen if they do not get to the ground)

for protecting your own property, boil some water up and throw it at them they not come any more (if your an cooking shops you have access to cooking oil) do it from the first floor i would if i had an flat there if they was trying to brake into the unit below you and they mite set it on fire,

or more legal way is buy a lot of Die guns (it squirts ink like what's used in out door temp toilets you get at work sites) as they stay on you for about 3-4 weeks before the die comes off you (walking purple or Blue is an instant arrest if seen that colour) some even have smart water in them so when you report that you sprayed them with it you give them the smart water number that should be on the can

Got the word (friend on facebook) that in Dalston and surrounding areas the Turks have organised to provide community defence, she's lives there so it's definite, but apparantly this is happenig all over London. Sikhs, Muslims, Turks, and a few other ethnic communities are organising community defence. Can't say I blame them.
