I know theres LDR that can act as a sort of touch sensor but i fiqure if i was in a dark room it wouldn't work at all.

What i am after is a switch that when touched activates, i could use micro switches and stuff but i want that futuristic feel.

I've seen some (house) light switches that when you wave you're hand past it the lights turn on.

    Any ideas?

buy a universal TOUCHSCREEN remote for your tv, and mod it up to an infared reciever. This sounds like a great mod in the making!!

I considered this for a while a little time ago. The best I could come up with is an inset cube type arrangement. LED on the ceiling of it, LDR on the bottom, then stick ur finger in it :)

    Code:
    +------------------------+
    | ___________ |
    | | \_/ | |
    | | | |
    | | _______ | |
    | ----------- |
    +------------------------+
    Like that.

i dont have the addy been im working with those now. they are IC's they work as touch switches, they will even sence through things like Plexi, so you dont even see the IC its hidden behind the plexi. its sweet.
put it on a metal plate and it becomes a proxy switch you only have to get near it for it to switch over. its sweet stuff. Bug linear he gave me the link to start with.

Linear is a gold mine of INFO

i know i'm not linear but....
my mom has a monitor with touch buttons and while trying to figure out how thy work i tied a few things:

    1. finger - yes
    2. pencil - no
    3. hot breath - no
    4. metal paperclip - yes

so her's had to conduct electricity to "flip" the switch. i beleve mosfets(sp?) are sensitive enough to make push button switches. but i don't know how.

Linear, Linear, where for art though Linear.

Yea the other way i thought of doing it was like NiHiLiST said with an LED or sumother lighting sorce on the LDR.

But we shall see where this IC line goes

    this is what you are looking for;

pased from Linears IC-workshop thread (a thread you all should have read :) )

    ----------------------------------------------------
    QT11x

    Touch sensor ICs
    Street price $3 or less

This is a family of ICs that implement the capacitive touch switch function in a convenient package. It autocalibrates, making it a real non-headache to use. It will detect a touch (change in capacitance) even through gloves or a nonconductive panel (acrylic for example). QT113 is designed for extra sensitivity for use behind thick panels and has a continuously adjustable gain.

    Applications:
Touch switch control for anything that uses a conventional switch. BorgBob's LCARS panel.

    Degree of Difficulty: low
There's a minimal external component count with this product. You ay need to interface the logic output of this to a relay in order to close physical contacts (to emulate a reset button or power button) but in other cases, the logic output is usable directly.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

very cool stuff..gonna buy me a couple of those later this year to see how they work....dont have the money right now becouse im out of job :(

mind if i ask what you are planning to builld? :)

Well among other things .. H-bomb and suchlike
i thought that i would use it for my CD-Rom and other asuch like applications.. This being that i can stealth my CD drive and not have to worry aobut the powe button as i would just have to make a wave of my hand and it will open.

But as soon as i get my FREE sample (they are letting me havea free sample i love it) i will tell you if it was succesful or not

Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?

Erm, yeah, looks like this sorted itself out without my help. CryoTek, lemme know if this works out for ya, I'm interested in this IC but it's waaaay down my to-do list unfortunately.

I did read the datasheets and it looks like an easy implementation.

    They're sticky for a reason....

    Two Questions:

    1. Can this run on 12V?

    and

    2. When you order from the site listed above (http://www.qprox.com/products/qtouch.php)
does this include everything you need to get started (proxplate, etc.) or just the IC?

    Thanks

You will get only the IC, but the prox plate can be just about any hunk of conducting material.
