Heading to my origin country in 2-3 months Trip includes a fair few nights at trusted places and two nights at a hotel. Former I'm fine hopping on local wireless, latter not so much. Even though I do use VPN, I do want a firewall between my devices and whatever crusty El Cheapo setup chosen hotel has So need a travel router. Needs to have wireless LAN (duhhh), one LAN jack, WAN jack and wireless WAN. What would you recommend?
You might have to have two devices, or at least, a USB WWAN modem. Typically, if a travel router has LTE, it has LTE and wifi only, and works like a mobile hotspot. Travel routers with physical ports for double-NATting in a hotel, typically don't have LTE as well. For the dual-ethernet+wifi option, GL.inet have the opal, beryl and slate, which runs openWRT, and are pretty good devices. The ones with a USB port may support a separate WWAN modem, so you have an almost-all-in-one option that way. You'd have to check the compatibility and go from there with it though. Also, a Lebara mobile SIM should be a good call for data abroad?
GLinet have a usb 4G dongle that's cheap. It'll connect to the Slate 7 (& probably others) to give you loads of options for connectivity. The Mudi 7 does this in 1 box but at twice the price (but has a battery built in)
It depends on what you know and if you have systems in place at home. if your a ubiquiti user then the UTR is banging!! if you don’t, the GL.iNet offerings are superb.
I have the GLi.inet Slate 7 - works great. I also used to use the Beryl AX (which I still have lying around somewhere) and that was also great.
