Hello, Is it possible to tripple boot; I'm looking for; Win XP. Ubuntu Backtrack3 . Reason; Xp is my primary OS that i know quite abit abou. Ubuntu i am learning to use, only had a week. Backtrack for testing my own network and using all the programs on there. Thanks.
yes you can triple boot. Backtrack3 is not meant for a hard drive installation though. You can either use the ntbootloader or lilo/grub (whichever one Ubuntu uses)Just make sure that the loader you want to use gets installed LAST. (i.e to use the windows loader install Xp last)
Yep, Backtrack is ubuntu based but i'd rather just give it is own section. Is there a download file on here site? I can only see usb and CD.
Windows loader (afaik) won't let you boot to 'nix if you install it last. Seems fine for multiple windwos installs but not so good for windows/another OS mix
Actually it will (I have done it this way) but you have to use a program that copies the first 512bytes of the different partitions and add the location of those files to the boot.ini
Install Windows, Then *Nix... NTLDR doesnt like being last for some reason... If you set up NTLDR to do be the default MBR loader, then it will give the option for Windows or Other OS, then GRUB takes over when you select other... You can install windows later after *nix like C-Sniper said, but its just easier to do Windows first... Backtrack 3 is Slax based. Not Ubuntu! Personally, I would install in this order Windows Ubuntu Backtrack but have fun installing from CLI cause Backtrack doesnt have a GUI Installer like Ubuntu does...
Thanks null I have XP and Ubuntu install disks but how would i go about installing backtrack to harddrive.
google it. Theres a guide somewhere... Just make sure to either have it on a second computer or print it out/write it down
20GB for all three won't leave a lot of free space, but it should be enough. IIRC XP takes up 4-5GB, Ubuntu 3GB? Assuming Backtrack takes up another 3-4GB, that should leave some space for porn. As for the triple booting itself, Backtrack have a tutorial on just that: http://backtrack.offensive-security...to#Triple_boot_Vista.2C_Unbuntu_and_BackTrack . Vista instead of XP, but essentially it's (exactly) the same. In fact, Backtrack have a tutorial on just about anything; including the USB thing in another topic.
Both Linux distros take around 4GB for a full install. XP Takes about 6-10GB, so very little pron space left...
XP takes a tad over 2 gigs but you propably want to leave some space for System Restore, log files, temp files, updates etc. so better make a larger partition than 2GB.
I was looking at all 3 on a 20gig I suppose i could but it wouldn't leave room for anything as i've just discovered because i've filled my desktop 20gig in 3days. Laptop drives are dear or is it just me? I'll be needing an IDE and i was looking on the bay.uk and it was like £30 for a 20 that i already have.
