I'm troubleshooting a Sony Vaio laptop for a friend. The laptop is having intermitent harddrive failures, ie sometimes it boots sometimes it doesn't. I've found another HDD and now I want to try and copy all the data, basically image the old hard drive to the new. Is there any free software someone can recommend that will work with the laptop? Meaning I can't put both HDD's in the laptop. It does have a cd-burner in it so I could possibly copy an image to a disk, but what's on the hard drive is larger than 700MB. I've also got the laptop on my network, so I thought I might be able to get an image on the network. I just don't know the quickest, easiest way to copy it from one HDD to the other. Any wise words would be greatly appreciated. -Fizban
You could probably use Ghost to ghost an image of the HD to another machine over the network. I know there are TCP/IP options in there but I personally have never had cause to use the feature. I'm sure Google will be able to shed some light on things.
thanks for the info jetsetjimbo (why does that name sound familiar?) I may have to try and find a copy of Ghost
Kids cartoon program from the UK taht aired during the 80s as per the Avatar. I think Ghost should serve your needs nicely.
Thanks alot, I asked around at work after reading your first post and as it turns out one of the guys in the lab I work in happens to have a copy... wahooo. And now I remember the cartoon... Thanks again for the Help
Ended up using Digital Dolly, fully recovered the old hard drive, and backed up master boot and partitions to network drive the reimaged on new hard drive. I thought I'd try digital dolly since I'd have to wait until after the weekend to get Ghost. Anyways this thread can be closed... thanks for the help and suggestion Jetset.
