I am expecting a delivery of two new Nvidia cards in the next day or so to upgrade the two rigs i have currently.

I'm sticking a GT 440 in my Optiplex as its the fastest card I can get into this crap arse machine.

I have also ordered a GTX 470 for my Precision rig, and am planing on having this run 24/7 so i am expecting a massive increase relatively speaking in my output.

    So set-up as follows:

    Folding Rig (1)

    Q6600 @ 2.4ghz with Nvidia GT440 folding 24/7

    Folding Rig (2)

2 x Xeon 5160's @3.0ghz with Nvidia GTX 470. This will fold 24/7 after i balance the setup as the xeons chug along at warm 60-65 degrees in my house but it is warm in there, and am planing on sticking it in my nice airconditioned office.......also saves on the lecky bill ;)

I am planing on getting another Precision 490 as i have a couple of spare Xeon 5140's @ 2.33ghz which i shall drop another 470 into in the next few months So if anyone has a Dell Precision 490 they want shot of, (can be bare bones just need MOBO and PSU) please let me know :)

What on earth made you choose GTX 470s for folding? They are hot, slow and power inefficient...

I'd seriously recommend buying other cards instead.

    Fan bloomin tastic............... :(

Why are they so bad? I have seen guys folding with 460's and this has to be better as it has more cores etc..

Accepting that it isn't the best, what should i be looking for?

    GO me! :(

What James was getting at was that the GTX470 was based on the 1st gen fermi architecture. Which was power hungry and therefore hot running. The gtx460 used a revised fermi architecture which was more power efficient.
Really for folding either a gtx460 or the newer gtx560tis are king.

The 470 is faster than 460, but not by a huge amount. In contrast, it does consume a lot more power, so in the long run it will cost you a lot more.

A 460 or 560 would be much more energy efficient and a good deal quieter too. Plus the initial cost is lower too, so its win! win! win!

P.S. don't feel bad, we've all bought something silly over the years :D

    Congrats!!

I bought an HD4870 as my first gpu :sigh: horrible little thing for folding tho it was considerably cheaper than the GTX260 at the time and I didn't know the folding bug would bite me at all

    Thanks Guys

OK I see your point..(anyone want to buy a GTX 470? .......kidding :D)

I will run the card for a while and then sell it on to swap for a 560 etc.. at a later date.

I cant wait to get these new cards up and running as im already sick of seeing a sub 1000 PPD against my name!

Watch out.....im coming for the top ten! :)

I'll be hitting 7 million with the next update! I honestly didn't think I'd get another million as quick, but I kept a couple of machines chugging away and when I hit 6,500,000, I thought I may as well fire up some more and push on to 7M :)

Also, has anyone else realized that the team's 24 hour average is 12 and a half million points?! How's that happened? I assume James (zz9pzza) has something to do with it, at this rate we'll be back in 5th in less than 2 months time. Although the CC may put a dent in that.

It's because he was folding almost all of last week instead of just the weekend.

The team has just done it's 6millionth WU as well.

As much as it pales in comparison, I have just broke the quarter mill!

Able to leave my system on 3/7 days per week now so should get around 60,000 per week.

If I get enough cash together and upgrade to an i7 2600k I should double or treble that with bigadv :)

Bizarrely it actually took another two updates for me to hit 7M (really small tea time update to blame) but I got there eventually! Thinking of going on to 10M with my current setup now, although that won't happen due to the new found inefficiency of it compared to newer dedicated rigs and farms.
