...few months ago I found a very well written guide explaining how to optimise the picture quality when using a TV as a monitor (remove the wavey edges from text etc.), and now I've lost it and google has failed me badly!

Anyone have any tips/tweaks (or links to guides) for me? Using an ATI Rage Pro and the comp out atm, the picture quality is a fair bit better than when using any of gf4's tv outs but I know it can be made better with a little playing :)

    Thanks for your help,

    Rob.

TV out on a ATI Rage pro better than a Geforce 4 errm how????

I have used a few ATI Rage pros and the TV out quality was no way near as good as a proper duel head VIVO (Video in Video out) XFX 128 MB Geforce 4 Ti 4200.

I find that S-VHS makes all the difference, try flipping through your TV AV modes and use a S-VHS compatable connection if possible.

I've tried at least 4 GF4's and the TV out using the S-VHS connection always gave a worse picture than my ATI card... frankly I don't see why the gf4's should be better, it's hardly as if any new technology for displaying tv out has sprung up.

My one friend has a GeForce 2 and the video out is knaff, trying to read text is a no no, he has to do everything from memory. On my ATI card, the video out (whether I use the composite or S-Video out) looks fine, S-Video being a little more clear on decent TVs I find.

As for tweaking, well, it's a TV, unless your plugging it into an HDTV, I wouldn't expect much. You say you found a guide to make it better, that's great, I'd like to know myself. I tried to search a bit myself and couldn't get anything other than people trying to sell me a GeFroce 4 MX for $400 :eyebrow: :sigh:

With my experience, which isn't much, I'll say this :

make sure your refresh rate is lower, it might make your monitor flicker, but the TV will go all blurry if it's too high, that's assuming it allows you to change teh refresh rate for video out of course. Also are you running at 640x480, 800x600, or 1024x768 ? I find 800x600 is usually the best. 640 is way to linefilled, and 1024 is to new and really doesn't work nicely unless you've got a good TV. If you cna manage to run in an actual 320x240 that's probably the best for clarity, as they'll match then. Of course your start bar would be 6 inches tall :sigh:

All of this is with my video experience, I don't know what control you have with your stuff.

Have the Geforce 4 cards you have used been VIVO models?

Different models of graphics card use different chips for TV output, some Geforce cards including the Geforce 3 ti 200 use the Conexant TV output chip.

My Gefoce 4 TI 4200 VIVO uses a phillips chip, these different chips will give different results.

What cabling and connections do you use for connecting to you television?

I have used a svideo to scart adaptor into a widescreen 28 inch and the results were very clear.

Yeah... I'm pretty sure my Ti4600 is, but this gainward Ti4800 I'm using atm defo is :)

I'm using an s-video to scart cable too (21" tv), it's not the best TV so I'm not expecting wonders from it, but the tv chip on the ati card defo does a better job than any of my gf4's have and I'm sure with a little tweaking I can make the picture quality even better.

Ok, i couldnt be arsed to read everyones posts but im gonna throw in my 2p anyway:

Rage theatre chipsets on ATis are 10x better then nvidia offerings. Ok, VIVO cards mebbe better cause they use better chipsets but ive yet to see an nvidia that beats any ati ive used.
Philips chips are the WORST ive ever used. Irritable, on/off working, fuzzy, off colour picture - blah. :blah:

for starters lower the res as much as possible.
next use an svideo cable and in video properties increase the svideo sharpness to full.
next make sure its a GOOD, shielded svideo cable so it gets little interference.
try a good svideo-scart adapter too, good adapters = good quality onscreen.
lower the refresh to 60hz if u havent already.
    uhhh...
    make sure its on PAL-I

Hmm, that's about it - unless you can get it todo TV resolutions then youll never get rid of the blur completely imo :( if u find the article - lemme know!!
