As an ex-console user I naively assumed that from the moment I had assembled my high end build and installed Win 8 & Nvidia Driver that most if not all of my Steam games would run seamlessly, to my regret I've learnt otherwise, From modern games like Civilization V to now showing their age games like fallout 3, to Quote Tweak guides (If you don't optimize your system and keep everything updated and maintained correctly you will keep running into "mysterious" problems time and time again.) which I've found to be the case on this new build. Has anyone had any experience with the bellow guide? is it a reputable suite, are there better guides out there is it worth paying $4.50 for the deluxe version? TweakGuides Tweaking Companion guide Thanks for reading.
Personally I've never got on with those types of programs, as they just tend to over exaggerate problems. However for $4.50 it seems fairly reasonable.
I found it while searching for a fix for Fallout 3 bugs, the Regular Edition is free but there are no picture and the DRM prevents the use of copy and paste which can come in handy. TeaeakGuide Follout Having said that I haven't risked downloading it yet as I don't know if it's Virus free.
I don't know. For me I just updates my graphic card drivers every now and then. And my games always runs perfectly. Windows (since Vista) maintain the system automatically. There is just nothing needed. Honestly, if you need to start disabling stuff, and needed to tweak stuff out.. something is wrong with the system or game. I have never needed to do this, and I still run on a GTX 260 (although now it's time to change it after about 4 years...) As for in game graphical settings, it's a bit simple: If you have a high end gaming system (without the need to go over the top), just jam the game max everything and you are good to go. When your system is getting older, perhaps try high settings instead of max. So just drop everything by 1. If you want the best balance you can read a bit on the few feature what they are.. usually dropping AA by 1 or 2 setting level is all you need as it's quiet intensive process. When the system gets much older, an it's ~4 years old, especially the GPU then it becomes tricky to balance visuals and smooth game play. Then again now you have The Nvidia Game Experience thing which will auto configure your games settings, so you don't have to do anything.
The TweakGuide did sound like a magic pill, I'll try reinstalling Win 8 and see if that helps but failing that I'll need to start disassembling my build to find the problem. Thank you all for the input
I never bother with a lot of tweaks to OS since using 7, but some of thier game tweaks can be helpful sometimes when explain what some of the fine tuning you can do in the .cfg and so on or just general workarounds for games that have some bad bugs that are never corrected.
I bought this a while back and found it needlessly complicated. Why use 10 words when a thousand will do, eh? He tries to explain everything, but goes into so much detail you end up totally bogged down. I gave it to my retired dad, who has time to read and digest it properly and really likes it. I sympathise with your Steam problems, and have experienced similar myself. However I think a little search on the net for an answer to each specific problem - or asking on here - is the way forward.
That site is THE best tweaksite on the internet. Period. The owner is a bit of a tool, but his guides are second to none. I passed my Windows XP Microsoft certification exam because of the Win XP guide, not because of the book they were teaching. I've used the Tweakguide Companion for all OS installs and configurations since, and it ALWAYS been top notch. I've learned all Windows since XP inside out just from following his guides. Just to be clear, the tweaking companion for windows is FREE in PDF and does not contain DRM as far as I've ever experienced. You can buy the Deluxe version which contains pictures and such but really not necessary. The Win 8 guide is 457 pages so this is not something you would read unless you actually like learning about computers. All of the guides written in the past 5 years or more are written by one guy, called Koroush Ghazi. I had some communications with him some years ago and he's not a likeable guy at all, very smart but a bit of a tool. If you want to learn about Windows, read his guides. If you're looking for fast fixes and easy tweaks read some of the thousands of "trash" sites around the internet. I visit Tweakguides.com every day, he posts driver updates for most games as well as updates for Windows Update and more. He's written several game guides, and I actually found his site while trying to make TESIV work better on my 7800. After following his guide, it did. My XP installation was superbly responsive after going through his XP guide. Asides from writing about most features in Windows and what they do and how they are relevant to you, he offers several customizations to the UI that can really help you personalize your installation.
I'm not sure you should have to do all this sometimes it's the game like in Tombraider or in Bioshock infinite, 2k were saying 'it's a nvidia problem'. With all the different configs there's gonna be problems, when Grid stuttered on xbox codemasters said it was cause some consoles were sold with a different HD.. they quickly fixed it with a patch but imagine the problems with all the different pc gear. Some developers even invite people to come in with their pc's to fix problems that they can't reproduce.
